Super Bowl XXXIV insights

Q&A with Rams DE Kevin Carter

Interviewed Monday, Jan. 24, 2000

Asked whether he thought the low-scoring NFC championship game will dispel the notion that the Rams’ defense is second to the high-powered Rams offense:

Carter: "That thought is just in the media. We’ve known all along that we had a very solid defense. The numbers speak for themselves. The offense has gotten a lot of much-deserved credit for the kind of season they’ve put together, but we’re all in this together as a team."

Asked what it means to be playing in a Super Bowl:

Carter: "Everyone who has ever played football, even as a kid, has wanted to play in a Super Bowl, so from that standpoint, it’s a dream come true. It’s can’t get any better than this right now, but we’ve got one more piece of the puzzle to finish off. Getting this last win over Tennessee would make everything perfect."

Asked about his team’s regular-season loss (24-21) to the Titans in Nashville:

Carter: "The game was a very tough game for us. We got behind early and then actually did a really good job of getting back into the game in the second half. We just put ourselves into too big of a hole to climb out of. You can’t do that on the road against a quality opponent, and the Titans really played well that afternoon. It was a very hostile atmosphere, but we’ll have a neutral crowd here in Atlanta."

On defending against mobile Titans QB Steve McNair:

Carter: "He’s done a really good job. He’s almost like trying to tackle a running back with how hard he runs. He’s very elusive, and it’s tough to get a good shot on him because he can run so well and is so athletic. It’s much easier to rush a passer if he is standing still, and that’s definitely not something McNair does."

Asked about the Rams’ storybook season:

Carter: "It’s been a classic story of a great cast of characters coming together. You’ve got a quarterback in Kurt Warner who was bagging groceries not so long ago. You have a veteran running back like Marshall Faulk who has found new life with his second team. And you have a head coach who had brought a team to the Super Bowl many years ago and then was in television for years. There are a lot of good guys on this team, and it’s a heartwarming story. It’s good to see that good guys finish first in this case."
