Denver Broncos
After injuries to Terrell Davis and Derek Loville, the Broncos had to go to fourth-round pick Olandis Gary, who has been very impressive since getting his chance to play. Gary has appeared in only 11 games, yet he has rushed for 1,121 yards. He was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week after gaining 183 yards against the Seahawks in Week 15.

Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs were ready to bury OT John Tait after he held out through training camp. But since joining the starting lineup midway through the season, Tait has played like something other than a rookie. He has played with toughness and has done well sealing the outside on runs. Tait’s emergence came quickly. After seeing his first action in Week Five, Tait was playing in crunch time by Week Nine.

Oakland Raiders
Raiders boss Al Davis fell in love with DE Tony Bryant before the draft and wanted to use the team’s first-round pick to take him. Instead, Oakland waited until the second round to select Bryant. The rookie had 4½ sacks and was steadily taking playing time away from James Harris before an ankle injury knocked him out of action. Still, Bryant showed enough potential that he is considered a building block for the future. Rookie LBs Eric Barton and Sam Sword have also played significant roles lately.

San Diego Chargers
It has been yet another lean year for rookies in San Diego, where GM Bobby Beathard’s track record has taken a beating. The best of the bunch in ’99 has been H-back Reggie Davis, an undrafted free agent out of Washington. Davis has been a decent blocker and has done well on special teams. Davis caught six passes, including one for a touchdown, vs. the Bears in Week 11.

Seattle Seahawks
Though he hasn’t been getting the repetitions lately (starters Michael Sinclair and Phillip Daniels usually decide when they come out), DE Lamar King has played well when given the chance. He’s put good pressure on the quarterback and even blocked a field goal that was returned for a touchdown.
