Opinion Man speaks out on TEs

Dilger is a more complete tight end than Gonzalez — for now

Opinion Man takes a look at tight ends:

square.gif (826 bytes) Here’s the question: Would you rather have the Chiefs’ Tony Gonzalez or the Colts’ Ken Dilger as your tight end? While most fans would undoubtedly take Gonzalez, I would take Dilger right now. A year from now, I wouldn’t be surprised if I give the nod to Gonzalez, who still has a lot of upside, but right now the grades on the two are so similar that I’ll take Dilger who is the more complete player. Gonzalez scares defenses way more than Dilger, but Dilger is the more complete player. Dilger is the better blocker. Sure, Gonzalez’s speed and athletic ability are amazing, but I like the way Dilger does all the little things. A football game is a marathon not a sprint, so I’ll go with Dilger. I think a wide receiver can do all the things Gonzalez can do (although even I must admit that Gonzalez’s ability to do so from the TE spot causes major matchup problems), but I don’t see another position on the field that can block and run after the catch like Dilger. When Gonzalez becomes just a little more well-rounded, he’ll be my guy. But for now I’ll go with Dilger.

square.gif (826 bytes) I think that Shannon Sharpe is going to have a very big year for the Ravens. I don’t think that this is the year the wheels start to fall off for Sharpe.

square.gif (826 bytes) Steelers TE Mark Bruener has never received the credit he deserves.

square.gif (826 bytes) If the 49ers were in better shape at quarterback (I’m assuming Steve Young either retires or plays for another team in 2000), I think Greg Clark would be ready to take a big step up in class.

square.gif (826 bytes) I’m really surprised that Rickey Dudley has not become a better player than he has.
