| Washington has announced that it will release veteran
PR-KR-RB Brian Mitchell and RB Larry Bowie Friday. ProFootballWeekly.com has learned
that the two players are being released in a cost-cutting move aimed at freeing up space
under the salary cap. With the additional cap space, the Redskins hope to be able to sign
CB-PR Deion Sanders, who is expected to be cut by Dallas in the next few days. Sanders is
looking for a contract in the range of $8 million per year. In return, he will give up his
baseball career and concentrate on football full time.
Denver may also be interested in bidding for Sanders' services.
Mitchell is a 10-year NFL veteran who has handled the Redskins' punt- and
kickoff-return duties for years. Last season he ranked ninth among the 12 NFC qualifiers
in punt-return average with an 8.3-yard average, and he was 16th out of 21 NFC
kickoff-return qualifiers with a 20.8-yard average. By comparison, Sanders averaged 11.5
and 21.8 yards on punt and kickoff returns, respectively, last season, although his
primary value to the Redskins would be as a cover cornerback.
Bowie is a four-year veteran out of Georgia. |
