A look at defensive statistics

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief

I just finished my weekly journey through the incredibly detailed statistical section of the Pro Football Weekly Web site, provided by the number-crunchers at STATS Inc.

This week I am taking a look at defensive statistics:

  • Buccaneers LB Derrick Brooks is averaging 12.0 tackles per game at home, compared to 7.0 on the road.
  • Saints LB Mark Fields had nine or more tackles in three of New Orleans’ first four games this season, but he has had only three, two and four tackles in his last three outings.
  • Jaguars LB Kevin Hardy is a traveling man. He has had 5.5 sacks in five road games, compared to 2.0 sacks in four home games.
  • The Jets have played two games against AFC West teams. In those two games, LB Mo Lewis has six passes defensed. He has only one pass defensed in the Jets’ other seven games.
  • Chargers LB Junior Seau has recorded three sacks in two games on turf this season. In seven games on grass, he has zero sacks.
  • Dolphins LB Zach Thomas is more than just a tackling machine. He has at least one pass defensed in seven of his last eight games this season.
  • Cardinals LB Rob Fredrickson must love playing teams from the AFC East. In three games vs. teams from that division this season, Fredrickson has 10 or more tackles in each contest. In his other six games, he has had 10 or more tackles only once.
  • Sacks have come in spurts for Rams DE Kevin Carter this season. He has had at least one sack in each of his last three games, during which time he has 6.5 sacks. In the four games before that, he was held without a sack. In the two games before that, however, he had three sacks.
  • 49ers DT Bryant Young came back from a horrible leg injury way ahead of schedule to play in the season opener. However, he had only one sack in the 49ers’ first six games. Young is starting to come on, posting three sacks in the last three games.
  • Raiders DT Darrell Russell must love home cooking. He has six sacks at home this season, compared to 2.5 on the road.
  • Chiefs S Reggie Tongue did not have a single forced fumble through the first six games of the season, but he has had four in his last three games.
  • Cardinals LB Ronald McKinnon did not have a single forced fumble through the first six games of the season, but he has had three in his last three games.
  • Don’t just look at the 6.5 sacks tallied by Titans DE Jevon Kearse. He also has been credited with either a pass defensed or a forced fumble in all but one of Tennessee’s nine games this season.
