Trends, tips and timely stats — Week Nine

By Art Edelstein

  • Heading into their game in San Francisco, the Steelers have lost 3-of-4 straight up and vs. the spread on the road vs. NFC teams.
  • The 49ers need to get their defense on track. San Francisco has allowed 31 or more points in each of its last three games.
  • Heading into their game in the Meadowlands vs. the Jets, the Cardinals have not covered either of their games on turf this season.
  • Arizona has not scored more than 16 points since Week One.
  • The Dolphins vs. the Titans should be a close game. Miami's last six games have been decided by seven or fewer points. Tennessee's last five games and 6-of-7 games this season have been decided by three points or fewer.
  • The 21 points for the Rams last week was their lowest output of the season.
  • Rams RB Marshall Faulk has been on fire. He has averaged 199 combined yards has last three games.
  • The Bills' offense has been struggling. The team has not scored more than 16 points in its last three games, and QB Doug Flutie has thrown eight interceptions during that time. Buffalo could break out this week vs. a Redskins team that has held only one opponent under 20 points.
  • Heading into its game vs. the Bears, the Packers' offense has been up and down. In odd weeks, the team has scored 23 or more points, but in even weeks the team has scored 15 points or fewer.
  • The Buccaneers and Saints have struggled to score all year. Between them, the two teams have scored more than 20 points only three times. In the last three meetings between these teams, they have combined for 20 or fewer points.
  • With the Seahawks' defense playing well, it could be hard for the Bengals to score. Cincinnati has been held to 10 or fewer points in 6-of-8 games.
