Trends, tips and timely stats — Week Eight

By Art Edelstein

  • Going into their Monday-night game in Green Bay, the Seahawks have lost 4-of-6 vs. the pointspread in games played on grass.
  • Going into their game in Washington, the Bears have lost three in a row both straight up and vs. the spread on the road vs. NFC East teams
  • The Giants have won five straight vs. the Eagles, covering the spread in four of those games. The last three meetings between these teams have stayed under the total.
  • The Giants have had trouble running the ball and are now down to their No. 3 running back in LeShon Johnson. New York’s best rushing outing of the season was in Week Four vs. the Eagles, also its Week Eight opponent.
  • The Chargers have also had trouble running the ball and are now without RB Natrone Means. San Diego has averaged 57.3 rushing yards its last four games and has not had a 100-yard rushing game as a team all season.
  • Buccaneers RB Mike Alstott has averaged more than five yards per carry in each of his last four games but has carried the ball more than 14 times only once during that span.
  • The Rams’ offense continues to roll. WR Isaac Bruce has had at least one TD catch in all but one game, and in that game he had 152 receiving yards. Thanks to a pair of great games from RB Marshall Faulk, the Rams have rushed for a total of 400 yards the last two weeks.
  • Packers TE Tyrone Davis has been a big fantasy-football disappointment. He caught seven TD passes last season but has none so far this year.
  • The Ravens hope new starting QB Tony Banks can improve their anemic passing attack, which has produced no TD passes in three of their last four games.
  • Bengals QB Akili Smith could be under a lot of pressure vs. the Jaguars. Cincinnati has allowed 13 sacks in its last three games combined, and Jacksonville has recorded 12 sacks in its last three.
  • Broncos QB Brian Griese’s second straight 300-yard passing game marked the first time a Denver quarterback had done that in back-to-back games since John Elway did it three games in a row in 1996 (Weeks Five, Six and Eight).
  • The Dolphins could have trouble recording a third straight 100-yard rushing game vs. a Raiders run defense that has held 5-of-7 foes to fewer than 100 rushing yards but has allowed a total of 286 rushing yards in the last two weeks combined.
  • The Browns have not won the time of possession battle in any of their games. Cleveland has not held the ball for as much as 28 minutes in any of its games.
  • Heading into their game in Denver, the Vikings have lost six fumbles in their last three games, but Denver has not recovered an opponent’s fumble in 6-of-7 games this season.
