Joel Buchsbaum’s NFL notepad

Deion will concentrate on football; Harbaugh struggling

May 12, 2000

PFW contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum has his ear to the ground in the NFL. Here’s what he’s been hearing lately.

Deion Sanders has apparently given up on baseball to just work on rehabbing his knee and getting ready for the football season. He will expect a huge contract (after his expected release by the Cowboys), so that will be interesting to watch.

• The Rams are very interested in signing C Steve Everitt. They’re talking about a deal in the $1.5 million range. His agent appears to be willing to go for that, so I think you’ll see a deal made.

• The Ravens may cut WR Billy Davis and DT Tony Siragusa, depending on whether they can sign Gilbert Brown. Davis has really disappointed the team in his lack of conditioning and weight.

• The Raiders were extremely impressed with (second-round draft pick) WR Jerry Porter during their minicamp. The same was true of the Chargers and (fourth-rounder) WR Trevor Gaylor. Both of those players could start as rookies this fall.

• Chargers QB Jim Harbaugh did not throw the ball well in minicamp. The team is very concerned about the QB situation at this point. One observer said the best quarterback they have on the team right now is Moses Moreno.

• Here’s the background behind the Cowboys’ decision to cut backup QB Mike Quinn: Quinn was originally with former Cowboys head coach Chan Gailey in Pittsburgh when Gailey was the offensive coordinator there. The Cowboys picked Quinn up during Gailey’s tenure. Dallas cut him basically as a way of severing ties with the Gailey era. Quinn was a constant reminder of that time. And the move was a little dig at Gailey.

• Packers P Josh Bidwell is having trouble getting the ball off as quickly as the team wants. That is a major concern, because the last thing they want is blocked kicks.

• San Francisco likes the way QB Jeff Garcia is throwing the ball.

• Green Bay is very happy with Ross Verba’s move to left guard thus far.

• Free-agent C Tony Mayberry should be signed pretty soon. A lot of clubs are interested in the ex-Buccaneer, but the money is going to be the key factor.

• Seattle’s minicamp star was WR Darrell Jackson, a third-round pick out of Florida.

• Now that Jets LB Mo Lewis has signed the one-year tender offer he got as a franchise player, it looks as though he will work out with the team in the offseason. That would be a big plus.

• Dolphins WR Oronde Gadsden lost some leverage in his contract talks with the team when it signed Bert Emanuel. Miami got a great deal with Emanuel.
