Niners, Saints hit hardest by injuries

Steve Young

We asked NFL insiders to name the teams that have been hit the hardest by injuries this season. All responses were made anonymously.

1. San Francisco 49ers — "Steve Young was the one player they could not afford to lose. Then throw in the fact that they lost a great runner in Garrison Hearst and some key people on both sides of the ball, and you have a mess."

2. New Orleans Saints — "Ricky Williams has never been healthy; QB Billy Joe Hobert has never been close to healthy. They lost their best defensive lineman, Joe Johnson, for the year. And their second-best offensive lineman, Wally Williams, and key players like Cam Cleeland and Mark Fields have missed a lot of time."

3. Denver Broncos — "(They lost) Terrell Davis, John Mobley and Shannon Sharpe in the same year John Elway retired."

4. Atlanta Falcons — "Chris Chandler missed a lot of time, and Jamal Anderson went down for the count. Most of their defensive linemen have been hurt. The list goes on and on."

5. New York Jets — "Everything hinged on Vinny (Testaverde) staying healthy, and he went down for the count in the opener."

6. San Diego Chargers — "All their playmakers on both sides of the ball, except for Junior (Seau), got hurt."
