John Elway

We asked our panel of insiders whom they considered the Most Valuable Player of the 1990s. As one might expect, quarterbacks dominated the list. All responses were made anonymously.

1. QB John Elway, Broncos — "Once he got out of Dan Reeves’ offense, he played the best football of his career." … "Nobody had more talent, and he peaked in this decade." … "What has happened this year should tell you just how much he meant to that team."

2. QB Brett Favre, Packers — "Of all the players (GM) Ron Wolf brought in, he was most responsible for bringing the Pack back." … "The new John Elway." … "How many games has he missed? How many games has he played? How many games has he brought the Pack back in?" … "Where would they be without him?" … "Getting Favre from the Falcons for a first-round pick was one of (the greatest), if not the greatest, trades in pro football history."

3. QB Troy Aikman, Cowboys — "Has the Super Bowl rings to prove it." … "Not the improviser that Elway or Favre were but did exactly what was asked of him and played his best in the playoffs and Super Bowl."

4. QB Steve Young, 49ers — "Took over where Joe Montana left off." … "Has any quarterback ever been more efficient? He has been in the zone for a decade. That is unheard of."
