Dolphins lead list of deepest teams

| We asked NFL insiders to name the teams with the best depth.
In almost every instance, the first response was the Dolphins. What follows is a
compilation of those responses. All comments were made anonymously. 1. Miami Dolphins
"Most clubs cant find four defensive linemen who are good enough to play
with, and the Dolphins have six legitimate, quality starters and two more who are pass
rushers. On the offensive line, they have three good guards, two centers and three
tackles. Patrick Surtain is their third corner, and he would start for most teams.
Everywhere you look, except quarterback, they have depth."
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers "They have two or three quarterbacks, six
defensive linemen, four or five linebackers and at least three legitimate cornerbacks.
Then throw in four receivers (who are) good enough to start."
3. Kansas City Chiefs "(They have) lots of linebackers, four
cornerbacks and Warren Moon as a backup quarterback."
4. Denver Broncos "(Denver has) plenty of quarterbacks and linemen,
plus at least three and maybe even four cornerbacks and safeties."
New York Jets The Jets were rated by the panel, but as one panelist said,
"Theyre no longer there because they have had to use up a lot of their depth to
replace their injured starters."
Here are some comments made about the Jets before their rash of injuries: "Picking
up Rick Mirer, Quinn Early and Dwight Stone was really big. The thing people dont
realize is what a great job Bill Parcells has done with almost unwanted free agents that
had been in the league. Both of last years starting defensive ends (Rick Lyle and
Anthony Pleasant), Otis Smith, Kerry Jenkins, Early, Stone and Ernie Logan were all almost
available (to anyone) for the taking or on waivers. And although they cost more, Parcells
still got great values in Kevin Mawae, Vinny Testaverde and Bryan Cox."
"The Jets pro-personnel department just does an amazing job. It seems like
almost everyone the Jets pick up contributes, and they do a very good job of matching
talent with system. You rarely see the Jets trying to hammer square pegs into round
holes." |
