Turner, Coslet among most overrated head coaches

By JOEL BUCHSBAUM, Contributing editor
As published in print July 12

The question was: Who are the most overrated head coaches in the NFL? What follows are the responses from NFL insiders. All comments were made anonymously.

1. Norv Turner, Redskins — "Pushed for and got Heath Shuler and Michael Westbrook before backing away from taking responsibility for the team’s choices." … "Too many players underachieve under him." … "What’s he ever won?" … "A fine offensive coordinator who is in over his head." … "His teams always lack discipline."

2. Bruce Coslet, Bengals — "He is one hell of an offensive coordinator, but as a head coach he only has had one team, his second year with the Jets, play to their talent level."

3. Dick Vermeil, Rams — "His teams used to win 3-4 games they should have lost. Now they lose 3-4 games they should win."

4. Pete Carroll, Patriots — "He is brilliant, lots of fun and full of ideas, but he is not organized and disciplined enough to be a head coach." … "The Patriots’ talent level is the equal of anyone in the AFC — including the Broncos — but what have they won?" … "I feel Pete is one hell of a defensive coordinator and a decent head coach who is undermined by a personnel department that has really fallen off since Bill Parcells and his group left town."

5. Jeff Fisher, Oilers — "Great guy. Good at holding a team together but does a horrible job of putting together staffs, because he is way too loyal to his friends." … "They should have made the playoffs in each of the last two years. The won-lost record does not match the talent."
