We asked NFL insiders to rank the top comeback players of the ’99 season. Here are their responses, which were made anonymously.

1. DT Bryant Young, 49ers — "To come back from that type of (leg) injury and play like he played the second half of (the ’99 season) is just unheard of. The only reason he was able to defy the odds and the medical predictions was that he worked harder on his rehab than most players can work."

2. QB Jeff George, Vikings — "Went from a guy almost nobody wanted to being the quarterback the Colts thought they were getting when they traded up in 1990 to take him with the first pick in the draft."

3. C Brian Williams, Giants — "Was not the same player, but came back from a very serious eye injury that kept him out for two years, and started."

4. DT Alonzo Spellman, Cowboys — "Came back from the depths of mental illness (bipolar disorder) and despair to have one of his better years after being all but written off by almost everyone except Jerry Jones."
