Chicago Bears
Setback: Entering the season, the Bears believed their punting and kicking games would be team strengths. But it hasn’t worked out that way. PK Jeff Jaeger missed 6-of-8 field-goal attempts before being placed on injured reserve with a hip injury, and Todd Sauerbrun has struggled with his punting and had run-ins with special-teams coach Keith Armstrong.

Aftermath: The situation hasn’t improved. Sauerbrun has been taken off kickoffs to focus more on his punting, and the Bears practically held an open tryout to replace struggling PK Chris Boniol, who was acquired when Jaeger went down. In all, the Bears have used four placekickers this season who have combined to miss an astonishing number of FG attempts.

Detroit Lions
Setback: As if Barry Sanders’ retirement weren’t enough of a setback, the Lions were beset by injuries throughout the preseason and into the regular season. Detroit had to shuffle its offensive line on numerous occasions, and the defense still hasn’t been able to start its top 11 on a consistent basis. To make matters worse, All-Pro WR Herman Moore has played all of 30 minutes this season because of knee injuries.

Aftermath: FS Mark Carrier said earlier this season that the Lions expect just as much from their reserves as they do from their starters. More times than not, that’s exactly what they’ve gotten. Players from all over the depth chart have stepped up to make big plays at key moments, and the team as a whole has finally bought into head coach Bobby Ross’ hard-working mentality.

Green Bay Packers
Setback: On Jan. 8, 1999, the Mike Holmgren era officially ended in Green Bay. The former Packers head coach took over just about every aspect of the football operations for the Seahawks — who now are in first place in the AFC West.

Aftermath: The Packers have yet to recover from Holmgren’s departure, a point that was made painfully clear when Seattle came into Lambeau Field and whipped Green Bay in Week Eight. Brett Favre’s performance has suffered without his QB mentor, and the offense’s production in general has been below par. Green Bay has also lost its home dominance, dropping back-to-back home games for the first time since 1991. Under Holmgren, the Packers were 49-7 at Lambeau.

Minnesota Vikings
Setback: After signing a five-year, $28 million deal last December, QB Randall Cunningham started the ’99 season in a funk. Showing no signs of recovering, Cunningham was benched in favor of Jeff George midway through Minnesota’s Week Six game at Detroit.

Aftermath: George has done everything that Cunningham didn’t. He’s read defenses well and given the Vikings’ offense the consistent big-play threat that was missing with Cunningham. George won his first four starts after taking over — the first time in his career he’s done that — and put Minnesota back in the NFC Central race.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Setback: After averaging 27 points and 331 yards per game in the preseason, the Buccaneers’ offense struggled out of the gate in the regular season. The unit averaged only 14.7 points and 264.2 yards in its first six games, prompting head coach Tony Dungy to bench QB Trent Dilfer for the first time ever.

Aftermath: Backup QB Eric Zeier didn’t do much better in his outing (a 20-3 loss to Detroit) and suffered a rib injury in the process. That meant a second chance for Dilfer, who has delivered this time. Dilfer has played more relaxed and thrown the ball much better, especially on deep passes. In fact, his two best games this season were the first two after his return.
