Denver Broncos
Setback: The Broncos have been bitten hard by injuries this season, but none hurt more than the loss of RB Terrell Davis to a season-ending knee injury in Week Four.

Aftermath: Olandis Gary replaced Davis after a hamstring injury shelved backup Derek Loville, and Gary has done a nice job. But while Gary moves the chains, he is not the difference-maker Denver has needed. The loss of Davis is a big reason the Broncos, even though they have been competitive, haven’t been able to climb out of their early-season hole.

Kansas City Chiefs
Setback: The Chiefs’ loss to the Buccaneers in Week 10 was huge. Kansas City started off 5-2 but then embarked on a five-game stretch that featured games at Indianapolis, Tampa Bay, Oakland and Denver and a home game vs. Seattle. The Chiefs pointed to the Tampa Bay game as the most winnable in that stretch. To lose despite forcing six turnovers was disheartening.

Aftermath: We’ll see. If the Chiefs can steal one from the Broncos or Raiders, they may be able to hang in the playoff race. But if Kansas City falls out of the postseason hunt, it will point to the Buccaneers loss as the key blow.

Oakland Raiders
Setback: A Week Five loss to Denver, which was 0-4 at the time, seemed at the time to be a crucial one for the Raiders. It dropped them to 2-3, and they faced a trip to Buffalo the next week. Moreover, OLT Mo Collins was hurt in the loss, so first-year man Barry Sims had to replace him — just in time to face Bills DE Bruce Smith.

Aftermath: The Raiders played one of their better games under Jon Gruden at Buffalo, rushing for 195 yards and beating the Bills 20-17. With a lot of help, Sims did a good job vs. Smith.

San Diego Chargers
Setback: The Chargers started the season 4-1, but in their fourth win, QB Erik Kramer threw four second-half interceptions. That started a flood of turnovers that continued in the next three games, all of which were losses. San Diego turned the ball over 14 times in those three games.

Aftermath: The turnover binge was too much for the banged-up, often overmatched Chargers to overcome. A five-game losing streak has the Chargers reeling.

Seattle Seahawks
Setback: Defensive coordinator Fritz Shurmur planned to be part of the Mike Holmgren regime this season. But cancer sidelined and then claimed Shurmur, who died just before the season began.

Aftermath: The Seahawks’ defense has given up a lot of yardage, but it doesn’t allow a lot of points. One has to wonder whether Shurmur could have made the unit better. Interim coordinator Jim Lind, using many of Shurmur’s schemes, has done a good job of making in-game adjustments. Veteran assistants Bob Zeman and Dick Roach, brought on after Shurmur’s illness forced him to leave the team, have helped.
