Buffalo Bills
Setback: WR Eric Moulds went out in the second half of the Oakland game in Week Six with a hamstring injury and missed the next two games. The Bills’ record in those games was 1-2, and the one win came courtesy of a Doug Flutie miracle at Baltimore.

Aftermath: Moulds returned earlier than expected for the Washington game in Week Nine, and — presto! — Buffalo’s offense vastly improved. With Moulds in the lineup, Flutie is a much better player, and the running game is more effective because opposing defenses must respect Moulds’ speed. His 2½-game absence gave rookie WR Peerless Price more playing time, accelerating his growth.

Indianapolis Colts
Setback: The Colts are 2-2 in the highly competitive AFC East, but they feel they easily could be 4-0. Indianapolis had sizable leads vs. the Patriots (Week Two) and Dolphins (Week Five) but blew both games in the fourth quarter.

Aftermath: The ones that got away haven’t hurt the Colts yet, but they may come back to haunt them down the stretch. With so many teams tightly bunched in the division, tiebreakers could come into play. That pair of three-point losses could mean the difference between a division title and a wild-card berth for the upstart Colts.

Miami Dolphins
Setback: The Dolphins devoted a ton of time and energy in the offseason to improving their running game. Yet until J.J. Johnson turned the trick in Week 11 (albeit with an average of only 3.4 yards per carry), the Dolphins had not produced a 100-yard rusher, and their running game as a whole continues to be more of a liability than an asset.

Aftermath: The running game’s inconsistency at times has made Miami a one-dimensional team, enabling opponents to gang up on the quarterback. Case in point: the Dolphins’ Week Five game at Indianapolis, where Dan Marino took a beating and suffered the injured neck that has sidelined him for more than a month.

New England Patriots
Setback: The Patriots had a 14-0 lead at home over the Dolphins in Week Six, and Dan Marino was standing on the sideline, done for the game with an injured neck. The Pats figured they had the game won, but back came the Dolphins, who won 31-30 in a game Patriots head coach Pete Carroll later called a "killer."

Aftermath: The Patriots won their next two games, but the Miami loss could have major ramifications in the division and conference standings. Because it came against an AFC East rival, the loss essentially served as a two-game swing.

New York Jets
Setback: Less than one-half of one game into what they thought would be a championship season, the Jets lost their starting quarterback, Vinny Testaverde, to a year-ending ruptured Achilles tendon.

Aftermath: It took weeks for the shocked Jets to shake their post-Testaverde funk. The loss of an indispensable player caused severe damage to the team’s psyche and forced the offense to radically change its philosophy. Only in recent weeks have the Jets begun to recover.
