Baltimore Ravens
Setback: The benching of QB Scott Mitchell in the team’s home opener set the stage early on for the Ravens’ failure to pick up the Brian Billick system in its first year.

Aftermath: Billick has used a revolving door of quarterbacks and has gotten little productivity from WR Jermaine Lewis, as team members have had a difficult time grasping the offensive system. For the most part, the Ravens have gotten stellar play on the defensive side of the ball, but the offense has repeatedly had problems putting the ball in the endzone.

Cincinnati Bengals
Setback: The Bengals wanted to get off to a quick start this season, and in Week One at Tennessee they were up by nine midway through the fourth quarter. But after QB Jeff Blake and RB Corey Dillon were sidelined by cramps, the Titans rallied for a 36-35 victory.

Aftermath: The Bengals have played very poorly since that devastating loss, which brought on a funk that the team hasn’t been able to break out of yet. One has to wonder how different the season would have been had the Bengals started with a road win against a good Titans team.

Cleveland Browns
Setback: The Week One pounding the Browns took. Cleveland, in its first game since 1995, was beaten 43-0 by the Steelers. In that game, the Browns managed just 40 total yards and two first downs.

Aftermath: The Browns decided to accelerate the learning process of rookie QB Tim Couch. They started him in Week Two, and he has held the job ever since. The original plan was to allow Ty Detmer to start the first six games and then evaluate the situation.

Jacksonville Jaguars
Setback: It’s hard to imagine anything "setting back" a team that started the season 9-1, but Fred Taylor’s lingering hamstring injury has really been an annoyance. Everything on offense is geared toward Taylor, but he has played only two full games this year.

Aftermath: The offense hasn’t been nearly as explosive when Taylor’s not on the field. Scoring is down. The passing game isn’t very effective. Plainly put, the Jaguars have not been dominant when Taylor isn’t playing.

Pittsburgh Steelers
Setback: After starting the season with two road wins, the Steelers lost their first two home games, setting an ominous tone for a team that had dominated at Three Rivers Stadium under Bill Cowher.

Aftermath: The Steelers’ home-field disadvantage came to a head in Week 10, when they lost to the expansion Browns on a last-second field goal. Team president Dan Rooney called it one of the worst losses in franchise history, and it really put Pittsburgh behind the eight-ball in the AFC playoff race.

Tennessee Titans
Setback: After battling through a sore back for most of the preseason, QB Steve McNair was finally forced to the bench after Tennessee’s opening-day win. He would miss the next five games, a crucial early-season stretch highlighted by a Week Three meeting with AFC Central favorite Jacksonville.

Aftermath: The Titans rebounded well from McNair’s injury, mainly because they had a more-than-capable backup in Neil O’Donnell. Tennessee went 4-1 under O’Donnell’s direction, including a huge 20-19 win over the Jaguars. McNair returned to action in Week Eight but is still showing signs of rust from nearly six weeks of inactivity.
