Fantasy draft tips

What I learned from the PFW snake draft for a yardage league

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
May 9, 2000

On May 5, the editors of Pro Football Weekly conducted a mock draft for its fantasy football magazine, which will be available on newsstands June 27, 2000.

This was a 10-team snake draft (i.e., Team One picked first in odd rounds and last in even rounds) for a yardage league.

Here are the things I learned:

  • Even though the editors of Pro Football Weekly have been historically in love with taking running backs at the expense of quarterbacks in basic scoring leagues, quarterbacks got a lot more attention in the early rounds of our yardage-league mock draft. This is obviously a reflection of the fact that quarterbacks score a lot more points in yardage leagues (even those in which they only get three points for TD passes instead of six) than they do in basic scoring leagues.
  • Whereas the WR position runs out very quickly in basic scoring leagues, there is a ton of depth in yardage leagues.
  • The RB position was deep in our basic-scoring mock draft, and that depth seemed to hold up in our yardage mock draft.
  • Placekickers went even later in our yardage mock draft than they did in our basic-scoring mock draft.
  • Overall, there seemed to be more depth in the yardage mock draft than the basic-scoring mock draft. This makes sense since a yardage league makes players on bad teams (can you say "Charlie Garner") more valuable since even bad teams have players who pick up yards (they just don’t get to the endzone enough).
