Week Eight fantasy football

Weekend injury update

Friday, Oct. 20, 2000

Browns QB Tim Couch will miss the rest of the season after fracturing a bone at the base of his right thumb while throwing a pass on the final play of practice Thursday. With Couch awaiting surgery, the Browns placed their starting quarterback on injured reserve, ending his second season after only seven games. Eight-year veteran Doug Pederson, who played with the Eagles last season, will take over for Couch, with Spergon Wynn as the backup and newly signed Kevin Thompson as the No. 3 QB.

Jaguars WR Jimmy Smith missed his third consecutive day of practice Friday with a bruised right knee. Although Smith is listed as probable on the team's injury report, coach Tom Coughlin will probably wait until game time Sunday to decide whether or not to play Smith. The Jaguars' opponent, Washington, will be without the services of veteran CB Darrell Green, who has a calf injury.

Seahawks QB Brock Huard, who is questionable for Sunday’s game with a groin injury, practiced Friday, which is a positive sign for his prospects of playing Sunday. Coach Mike Holmgren had said that if Huard could practice "a little bit" this week, he would try to play Huard Sunday. If Huard can’t go, Jon Kitna would start.

Dolphins WR Tony Martin will miss the Monday-night game vs. the Jets with a hairline fracture of his left foot. It is estimated that Martin will miss 2-3 weeks. However, the Dolphins are expected to activate WR O.J. McDuffie for Sunday's game from the physically-unable-to-perform-list, where he had been after having undergone two surgeries on his left big toe. McDuffie began practicing this week. WRs Leslie Shepherd and Bert Emanuel will likely get more playing time as a result of Martin's injury.

Saints WR Jake Reed will miss six weeks after breaking his right leg in practice Wednesday. Reed's spot in the starting lineup will be filled by Keith Poole.

Bears FB Curtis Enis will once again be inactive Sunday with a strained left shoulder, missing his third game in a row. The Bears have signed Louie Aguiar to handle their punting duties, placing Brent Bartholomew on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Vikings DE Bryce Paup will miss approximately six weeks with a hairline fracture in his right leg. Paup suffered the injury in the Vikings' Sunday-night win over Chicago.
