Weekend injury update

Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000

Carolina QB Steve Beuerlein is battling the effects of the flu and is questionable for Sunday's game vs. New Orleans. After he woke up Saturday feeling ill, Beuerlein was unable to practice and went to a Charlotte hospital, where he was given fluids. Although he missed the team flight to New Orleans, he was expected to take a Saturday night flight. Beuerlein's backup is Jeff Lewis, who hasn't thrown a pass this season.

Detroit WR Germane Crowell will miss an estimated 6-8 weeks after breaking a bone in his left foot in practice Friday. The Lions have a bye this week. Early indications were that Herman Moore would replace Crowell as a starter.

Denver has signed PK Scott Bentley as an insurance policy in case Jason Elam can’t kick Sunday. Elam has been bothered by a sore lower back and although he played in the win over the Chargers last weekend, he believes he may have aggravated his back on the return flight from San Diego. Michael Husted, Frank Biancamano and Bentley all worked out for the team Friday, and on Saturday, the Broncos signed Bentley. Coach Mike Shanahan hadn't decided whether Bentley or Elam would kick Sunday.

Although Falcons QB Chris Chandler was listed as doubtful and Jets QB Vinny Testaverde was questionable on the NFL’s late-week injury report released Friday, both quarterbacks said late in the week they would be ready to play Sunday. Dan Reeves confirmed that Chandler would start Sunday, but Al Groh remained noncommittal about Testaverde's status.

Bears FB Curtis Enis will not play Sunday night against Minnesota. However, the status of WR Marcus Robinson remained day-to-day, with a decision expected Saturday or Sunday.

Dolphins LB Zach Thomas might miss the team's next game, a week from Monday night against the Jets, after aggravating a sprained ankle. Thomas reinjured his ankle in Sunday's win over Buffalo and said he probably made a mistake trying to play so soon after originally spraining the ankle Sept. 24. The Dolphins have a bye this week.
