Fantasy football — Editors' top 25 fantasy picks (regardless of position)

By the editors of Pro Football Weekly

Six PFW editors compiled their own draft boards ranking the top 25 players they would select if a fantasy football draft for the 1999 season were held today. These draft boards were compiled under the assumption that all players who are currently unsigned and/or threatening to hold out would settle their differences and be ready to play for their opening games.

You can see a more comprehensive draft board, ranking more than 275 players by position, in the current print edition of Pro Football Weekly, which features a 20-page fantasy football pullout section.

Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief

1. RB Terrell Davis / Broncos
2. RB Fred Taylor / Jaguars
3. WR Randy Moss / Vikings
4. QB Randall Cunningham / Vikings
5. QB Brett Favre / Packers
6. RB Jamal Anderson / Falcons
7. WR Antonio Freeman / Packers
8. RB Emmitt Smith / Cowboys
9. WR Cris Carter / Vikings
10. RB Dorsey Levens / Packers
11. WR Joey Galloway / Seahawks
12. RB Ricky Williams / Saints
13. WR Terrell Owens / 49ers
14. QB Steve Young / 49ers
15. WR Keyshawn Johnson / Jets
16. RB Barry Sanders / Lions
17. RB Curtis Martin / Jets
18. WR Eric Moulds / Bills
19. QB Vinny Testaverde / Jets
20. QB Peyton Manning / Colts
21. RB Edgerrin James / Colts
22. RB Ricky Watters / Seahawks
23. WR Marvin Harrison / Colts
24. QB Doug Flutie / Bills
25. QB Jake Plummer / Cardinals

Comments: The pick that stands out the most is Emmitt Smith at the No. 8 spot. Heck, most people don’t even have him in the top eight at his position on their draft board. Nonetheless, I believe Smith has another huge TD season left in him, especially because I think Dallas’ offensive line will be much improved over last year. Steve Young was probably the most difficult guy to rate. Off last year’s performance, Young and Terrell Davis should be in a dead heat, but I’m worried that the 49ers’ offensive line might fall apart and get Young hurt.

5. WR Antonio Freeman / Packers
6. WR Randy Moss / Vikings
7. QB Steve Young / 49ers

21. WR Herman Moore / Lions
22. RB Edgerrin James / Colts
23. WR Keyshawn Johnson / Jets
24. WR Eric Moulds / Bills
25. QB Randall Cunningham / Vikings

Comments: Ricky Williams ahead of Randy Moss? I can almost hear you gasping while you read this. Williams, playing for the ground-loving Mike Ditka and running behind a very tough offensive line, is going to be huge in the world of fantasy football. With running back being the most productive position in fantasy ball, three of my top four and six of my top 10 play that position. Wide receiver is a little deeper than usual this year, so I chose nine receivers compared to just six quarterbacks. Randall Cunningham at No. 25? I’m afraid he won’t be able to duplicate his 1998 success.

Michael Lev, Senior editor

1. RB Fred Taylor / Jaguars
2. RB Terrell Davis / Broncos
3. WR Randy Moss / Vikings
4. QB Brett Favre / Packers
5. WR Antonio Freeman / Packers
6. RB Ricky Williams / Saints
7. RB Jamal Anderson / Falcons
8. WR Joey Galloway / Seahawks
9. WR Keyshawn Johnson / Jets
10. WR Cris Carter / Vikings
11. RB Dorsey Levens / Packers
12. QB Randall Cunningham / Vikings
13. QB Vinny Testaverde / Jets
14. WR Terrell Owens / 49ers
15. QB Steve Young / 49ers
16. RB Barry Sanders / Lions
17. RB Edgerrin James / Colts
18. WR Eric Moulds / Bills
19. RB Curtis Martin / Jets
20. RB Marshall Faulk / Rams
21. WR Marvin Harrison / Colts
22. RB Emmitt Smith / Cowboys
23. RB Ricky Watters / Seahawks
24. QB Peyton Manning / Colts
25. QB Drew Bledsoe / Patriots

Comments: Yes, I’m the one — the madman who doesn’t have Terrell Davis atop his regardless-of-position list. I just happen to believe Fred Taylor is going to have a better season than Davis, who’s a very close No. 2. Half of my top 10 is composed of wide receivers, an indication of how strong (and top-heavy) that position is this year. Normally, I don’t believe in taking QBs early, yet I couldn’t help but place four in my top 15. That isn’t an indictment of the RBs and WRs; it’s a tribute to the high caliber of play those QBs are capable of if they stay healthy.

1. RB Terrell Davis / Broncos
2. RB Fred Taylor / Jaguars
3. QB Randall Cunningham / Vikings
4. QB Brett Favre / Packers
5. WR Randy Moss / Vikings
6. WR Antonio Freeman / Packers
7. WR Joey Galloway / Seahawks
8. RB Barry Sanders / Lions
9. QB Steve Young / 49ers
10. QB Jake Plummer / Cardinals
11. WR Marvin Harrison / Colts
12. WR Cris Carter / Vikings
13. WR Keyshawn Johnson / Jets
14. RB Dorsey Levens / Packers
15. WR Terrell Owens / 49ers
16. WR Eric Moulds / Bills
17. RB Jamal Anderson / Falcons
18. RB Ricky Williams / Saints
19. QB Drew Bledsoe / Patriots
20. QB Steve McNair / Titans
21. WR Herman Moore / Lions
22. RB Jerome Bettis / Steelers
23. RB Marshall Faulk / Colts
24. RB Curtis Martin / Jets
25. QB Vinny Testaverde / Jets

Comments: My top 25 is a testament to the depth at quarterback and wide receiver. Notice, I have four QBs in my top 10 and seven WRs in my top 15. I expect big things from Jake Plummer and Marvin Harrison, which is why I have them higher than most people. Conversely, I see the Jets’ offense taking a bit of a dive, so I have Keyshawn Johnson, Curtis Martin and Vinny Testaverde ranked lower than most people. Running backs take a beating on my board. I see only two sure things (Terrell Davis and Fred Taylor) in scoring leagues. But Ricky Williams should make some noise.

2. RB Fred Taylor / Jaguars
3. WR Antonio Freeman / Packers
4. QB Brett Favre / Packers
5. WR Keyshawn Johnson / Jets
6. WR Joey Galloway / Seahawks
7. QB Steve Young / 49ers
8. WR Cris Carter / Vikings
9. WR Terrell Owens / 49ers
10. WR Randy Moss / Vikings
11. RB Jamal Anderson / Falcons
12. QB Vinny Testaverde / Jets
13. RB Dorsey Levens / Packers
14. QB Jake Plummer / Cardinals
15. QB Randall Cunningham / Vikings
16. RB Barry Sanders / Lions
17. WR Eric Moulds / Bills
18. QB Drew Bledsoe / Patriots
19. RB Curtis Martin / Jets
20. RB Ricky Williams / Saints
21. RB Edgerrin James / Colts
22. RB Marshall Faulk / Rams
23. QB Mark Brunell / Jaguars
24. QB Peyton Manning / Colts
25. WR Jimmy Smith / Jaguars

Comments: Six of the top 10 players on my list are wide receivers, but there’s a significant drop-off at the position after them. Thus, if you get a chance to draft one of those six, you should take it. There isn’t a lot of value at the top of the RB board aside from Terrell Davis and Fred Taylor, but there is quality a little later on. I’m getting more and more nervous about Jamal Anderson as time goes by. Does his ’98 performance fit in the career-year category? I expect both Jake Plummer and Peyton Manning to join the ranks of the elite fantasy QBs in ’99.

1. RB Terrell Davis / Broncos
2. QB Brett Favre / Packers
3. WR Randy Moss / Vikings
4. QB Steve Young / 49ers
5. QB Randall Cunningham / Vikings
6. WR Antonio Freeman / Packers
7. RB Fred Taylor / Jaguars
8. QB Vinny Testaverde / Jets
9. RB Jamal Anderson / Falcons
10. WR Jerry Rice / 49ers
11. WR Cris Carter / Vikings
12. RB Ricky Williams / Saints
13. RB Dorsey Levens / Packers
14. QB Drew Bledsoe / Patriots
15. WR Terrell Owens / 49ers
16. WB Keyshawn Johnson / Jets
17. QB Mark Brunell / Jaguars
18. QB Peyton Manning / Colts
19. RB Barry Sanders / Lions
20. RB Ricky Watters / Seahawks
21. RB Edgerrin James / Colts
22. RB Marshall Faulk / Rams
23. WR Jimmy Smith / Jaguars
24. QB Jake Plummer / Cardinals
25. RB Curtis Martin / Jets

Comments: This is not an easy task, so I first chose who I believe are the four best offensive players. The top four are very explosive, and they’re on teams that will likely help them produce big fantasy numbers again. I usually try to rank on the basis of reliability and consistency over at least a couple of years, but as you can see, there are exceptions to every rule (Sanders, Williams, Cunningham). I wanted to place Rice, Brunell, Manning and Watters even higher, because I think their potential for a big year is higher than that of their counterparts. But there is just too much quality in the top 25.
