Week Nine fantasy football

Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999

This week’s bye teams: New England, N.Y. Giants and Oakland.

Avoid Saints receivers such as Eddie Kennison and Keith Poole this week. The Saints face the Buccaneers, who are fourth in the league in pass defense and have given up only six passing TDs, tied for third-lowest in the league. Plus, the Saints’ QB situation is up in the air, with starter Billy Joe Hobert again going out with a neck stinger last week.

This isn’t the best week to start 49ers RB Charlie Garner. Garner faces a Steelers defense that is allowing just 3.2 yards per rush, third-lowest in the league, and has surrendered only one rushing touchdown this season. Steelers ILBs Levon Kirkland and Earl Holmes are playing at a Pro Bowl level.

Look for Eagles RB Duce Staley to continue his strong play against the Panthers. Over the last four weeks, Staley is averaging 95.3 rushing yards per game with two 100-yard performances and one touchdown. The Panthers are 29th in the league in run defense.

Packers RB Dorsey Levens is a sound play vs. the Bears this week. Levens was the lone bright spot in Green Bay’s embarrassing Monday-night loss to the Seahawks, gaining 104 yards on 24 carries. The Bears are allowing a league-worst 4.8 yards per carry and surrendered 105 yards on 15 carries to Levens the last time Chicago and Green Bay met (Week 15 of ’98).

Be sure to start Seahawks QB Jon Kitna this week. Kitna hasn’t been spectacular this season, but he has been steady, throwing two TD passes in four of his six starts. Kitna faces a Bengals defense that is next to last in average gain allowed per pass and interception percentage.

Bills QB Doug Flutie hasn’t played his best football lately, but he could bounce back this week vs. the Redskins. Washington has given up 14 TD passes and the most passing yards in the league this season.
