Week Eight fantasy football

Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999

This week’s bye teams: N.Y. Jets, Pittsburgh and San Francisco.

You may want to avoid Raiders running backs this week. With Tyrone Wheatley (back) possibly sidelined, Oakland could go to a RB-by-committee system featuring Zack Crockett and Napoleon Kaufman. The Raiders face the Dolphins, who have the third-ranked run defense in the league.

Assuming he’s OK after suffering a concussion last week, start Patriots RB Terry Allen this week vs. the Cardinals. Allen is coming off his best game of the season (106 yards, two TDs), and the Cardinals are allowing 136.5 rushing yards per game.

Look for Saints rookie RB Ricky Williams to build on his breakout performance of last week (111 yards). Williams faces the Browns, who are last in the league in run defense and have allowed nine rushing touchdowns this season.

If he gets the go-ahead to play this week, start Jaguars RB Fred Taylor. The Bengals rank in the middle of the pack in terms of rushing yards allowed but have surrendered 10 rushing touchdowns, tied for most in the league.

If you’re looking for a quarterback this week, you could do worse than Kansas City’s Elvis Grbac, who is on a bit of hot streak (six TD passes in last four games, including two last week) and faces a Chargers defense that is much more vulnerable vs. the pass than the run. Peyton Manning threw for 404 yards and two TDs vs. San Diego, and Brett Favre threw three TD passes vs. the Chargers last week.

WR Darnay Scott has had a very productive season (40 catches, 477 yards) and last week caught his first TD pass. However, we don’t suggest starting him this week vs. the Jaguars, who are No. 1 in the league in passing yards allowed and average gain allowed per pass.
