Week Seven fantasy football

Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999

This week’s bye teams: Arizona, Jacksonville and Tennessee.

You may want to avoid Chiefs running backs in their Thursday-night game vs. the Ravens. With Rashaan Shehee (hip) less than 100 percent, Kansas City likely will use a RB-by-committee system, and that’s never good news for fantasy-leaguers. Baltimore is in the top 10 in total defense and rushing defense, and three of the Ravens’ five opponents have failed to rush for as many as 60 yards.

If you have a better option, you may want to bench Chicago’s Curtis Enis this week. Enis faces the Buccaneers’ No. 2-ranked run defense. Tampa Bay has yet to allow a rushing touchdown this season, and Enis hasn’t scored since Week Three.

Stick with the hot hand and start Steelers RB Jerome Bettis this week. Bettis is coming off his best game of the season (111 rushing yards, two touchdowns), and he faces a Falcons defense that ranks 29th in opponents’ rushing yards per game and average gain per rush. St. Louis’ Marshall Faulk rushed for 181 yards vs. Atlanta last week.

If you’re desperate for QB help, consider San Francisco’s Jeff Garcia this week. Garcia faces the Vikings, who have surrendered the second-most passing yards in the league. Garcia has done a decent job in place of Steve Young, passing for at least 233 yards in each of his three starts with a total of three TD passes and one rushing touchdown.

Eagles RB Duce Staley has been on a roll lately (back-to-back 100-yard rushing games), but he could struggle this week at Miami. The Dolphins have yet to allow a rushing touchdown this season. In their last four games, the Dolphins have allowed an average of just 62.8 rushing yards.

Browns QB Tim Couch may pass for a lot of yards in garbage time vs. the Rams this week, but don’t expect too many touchdown passes. St. Louis has allowed three TD passes, the second-lowest total in the league.
