Week Six fantasy football

Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999

This week’s bye teams: Baltimore, Kansas City and Tampa Bay.

Bengals QB Akili Smith was very productive in his starting debut, throwing for 221 yards and two touchdowns. But don’t consider those numbers an open invitation to start Smith this week. Pittsburgh’s defense is a lot better than Cleveland’s, and the Steelers’ zone-blitzing has been known to confuse young quarterbacks.

RB Tyrone Wheatley has been a pleasant surprise for the Raiders, but you’d be wise to sit him this week vs. the Bills. Buffalo has the top-ranked run defense in the league. In their last three games, the Bills have allowed a total of 129 rushing yards.

Assuming his hamstring is OK and Fred Taylor’s isn’t, start Jaguars RB James Stewart vs. the Browns. Stewart is running well, and often, and the Browns twice have allowed more than 200 rushing yards in a game, including last week vs. Cincinnati.

Even though he’s been pretty hot lately (three TDs in last four games), don’t start Browns WR Kevin Johnson this week. The Jaguars’ pass defense has been rock solid, and coordinator Dom Capers has a knack for making inexperienced QBs look bad (see Rick Mirer, Kordell Stewart). Tim Couch could be in for a long day, and if Couch struggles, so will Johnson.

Niners RB Charlie Garner is averaging more than 100 total yards per game, and he could flourish this week vs. the Panthers. Carolina is allowing 150 rushing yards per game, and this figures to be a much closer game for the 49ers (read: more rushing) than last week’s blowout loss at St. Louis.

The Cardinals have allowed the second-fewest passing yards per game and rank fourth in opponents’ average gain per pass attempt, but don’t let those numbers fool you into thinking red-hot Redskins QB Brad Johnson and his receivers will have a poor game this week. The Cards’ pass-defense statistics are deceiving. Arizona faced Philadelphia in Week One; a San Francisco team without Steve Young for the second half in Week Three; a Dallas team that broke out to a big early lead in Week Four; and a Giants team with Kerry Collins making his first start in Week Five.
