Week Four fantasy football

Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999

This week’s bye teams: Detroit, Green Bay and Indianapolis

Steer clear of Cardinals QB Jake Plummer. Not only is Plummer playing poorly (1-9 TD-interception ratio), but this week he faces the Cowboys, who are expecting CB Deion Sanders to return to the lineup. With Rob Moore again gimpy with a hamstring injury, Deion probably will check Frank Sanders, taking away Plummer’s top target.

You probably want to stay away from all Chiefs running backs this week. Bam Morris’ hamstring injury puts his status in doubt and could lead to a RB-by-committee system. Moreover, the Chiefs take on the Chargers, whose run defense is among the best in the league and held the Colts’ Edgerrin James to 46 yards last week.

While everyone has been talking about the Redskins’ potent offense, their defense quietly has surrendered a lot of yardage — more, in fact, than the offense has gained. So feel free to start Panthers RB Tshimanga Biakabutuka, who had a breakout game last week, or QB Steve Beuerlein, who has passed for more than 200 yards and at least one touchdown in all three games this season.

The Falcons’ run defense, which was among the best in the league in ’98, has struggled big-time in ’99, yielding 415 yards in three games. Consider that a green light to start Ravens RB Errict Rhett, who has recorded back-to-back 100-yard games since replacing Priest Holmes.

Looking for a WR sleeper? Try the Saints’ Keith Poole. Poole has been a big-play guy so far this season, recording TD receptions of 67 and 58 yards. The Bears’ defense has given up five passing touchdowns and an average of 270 passing yards per game.

The Raiders are first in the league in run defense, but don’t let that discourage you from starting Seahawks RB Ricky Watters this week. Watters is on the verge of breaking out after recording 99 and 98 yards the last two weeks.
