Week 16 fantasy football

Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999

This week’s bye team: Philadelphia.

Look for Bengals RB Corey Dillon’s recent hot streak (five total TDs, three 100-yard performances in the last three games) to come to an end vs. the Ravens. Baltimore is second in the league in rushing yards allowed per game and average gain allowed per rush. The Ravens have surrendered just six rushing touchdowns, and they yielded only 11 yards on the ground last week vs. the Saints.

Steer clear of Patriots RB Terry Allen. Allen seems to be nearing the end of the line, as evidenced by his production over the last two weeks (54 yards on 26 carries). With its playoff hopes dashed, New England may give some of its younger running backs a late-season audition. The Patriots face a Bills defense that has held the opposition under the 100-yard rushing mark in seven consecutive games.

Curtis Enis is the Bears’ No. 1 running option, but it’s doubtful he’ll do any damage vs. the Rams, who are first in the league in rushing defense. St. Louis has allowed only four rushing touchdowns this season and has held each of its last three opponents to 67 or fewer rushing yards.

Look for 49ers RB Charlie Garner to extend his scoring streak to four games vs. the Redskins this week. Garner has proved to be a multifaceted threat this season, piling up 1,071 rushing yards and 496 receiving yards. Washington allowed a rushing TD and a receiving TD to Colts RB Edgerrin James last week.

Giants QB Kerry Collins has been a consistent fantasy scorer since becoming the starter, passing for at least 240 yards and one touchdown in each of the last four games. That streak should continue vs. the Vikings, who are last in the league in pass defense.

If you’re desperate for QB help, take a flier on Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomczak. Tomczak faces a Panthers defense that has allowed 24 TD passes and ranks in the bottom six in passing yards allowed and average gain allowed per pass.
