Week 14 fantasy football

Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999

This week’s bye team: Chicago.

Steelers RB Jerome Bettis hasn’t scored a touchdown since Week Nine, and he hasn’t gone over 100 yards rushing since Week Six. That trend should continue vs. the Ravens, who rank second in the league in run defense. Baltimore has held four of its last five opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards. Bettis had just 46 yards on 16 carries in the first meeting between the teams (Week Two).

The Giants appear to have found an every-down runner in Joe Montgomery, but he could have a tough time repeating his 111-yard performance of last week against Buffalo. The Bills rank second in the AFC in run defense and haven’t allowed an opponent to reach the 100-yard mark since Week Seven. While his yardage total against the Jets was impressive, Montgomery averaged only 2.9 yards per attempt.

Stick with the hot hand and start Bengals RB Corey Dillon this week. The Bengals are in the midst of their usual end-of-the-season-when-the-games-don’t-mean-anything run, and Dillon has back-to-back 100-yard rushing efforts. He rushed for 168 yards in Week Five vs. the Browns, who are last in the league in run defense.

Speaking of hot hands, Falcons QB Chris Chandler has started to catch fire, throwing six TD passes and rushing for a score in his last two games. Now Chandler gets to face the woeful 49ers, who have allowed a league-high 27 TD passes, including four last week vs. the Bengals.

This isn’t the best week to start Broncos QB Brian Griese. Griese failed to throw a TD pass last week, when he fell into a trap of locking on to one receiver. The Jaguars have allowed the fewest passing yards in the league as well as the lowest average gain per pass play.

Look for Chiefs QB Elvis Grbac to throw multiple TD passes for the first time since Week Eight Sunday night against Minnesota. The Vikings’ secondary gave up two TD passes to Buccaneers rookie QB Shaun King Monday night. Before that, Minnesota surrendered back-to-back 400-yard passing performances to Jim Miller and Jim Harbaugh.
