Week 13 fantasy football

Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

Wednesday, Dec 1, 1999

This week’s bye team: Buffalo

If Saints RB Ricky Williams is deemed fit to play — and we were hearing reports to that effect as of this writing — he could have a big game vs. the Falcons, who rank near the bottom of the league in rushing yards allowed and average gain allowed per rush. Atlanta has given up at least 111 rushing yards in nine of its 11 games.

Lions RB Greg Hill could do some damage vs. the Redskins this week. Hill is about the only healthy halfback on Detroit’s roster, and he scored his first touchdown of the season last week. The Redskins remain third from the bottom in the NFL in rushing yards allowed and next to last in average gain allowed per rush.

RB Charlie Garner has become the 49ers’ only reliable offensive weapon, and he could put up decent yardage totals vs. the Bengals, who have yielded 111 or more rushing yards in five of their last seven games. If you’re in a scoring-only league, you might want to take a flier on 49ers FB Fred Beasley, who has become their short-yardage runner. Cincinnati has allowed 18 rushing touchdowns, tied for most in the league.

You probably want to avoid Patriots RBs Terry Allen and Kevin Faulk this week. New England’s ground game has been struggling, the Pats don’t have a dominant No. 1 back and they face the Cowboys, who have allowed only two rushing touchdowns.

Avoid Giants QB Kerry Collins this week. Collins faces the Jets, who have allowed only eight passing touchdowns, tied for fewest in the league. Jets defensive coordinator Bill Belichick is masterful at mixing up his fronts and coverages, and that could lead to a long day for Collins, who is still getting his feet wet in the Giants’ system.

New Steelers starting QB Mike Tomczak was very productive in relief last week, throwing for 264 yards and two touchdowns. But relieving vs. the Bengals and starting vs. the Jaguars are two very different things. Don’t expect Tomczak to have a particularly productive day vs. Jacksonville, especially with his WR corps banged up.
