Week One fantasy football

Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999

You may want to shy away from Broncos QB Brian Griese, at least in Week One. Denver faces Miami, which has one of the best defenses in the league. It’s not exactly the ideal defense for Griese to face in his starting debut. If they are to move the ball vs. the Dolphins, the Broncos likely will do so on the ground. RB Terrell Davis gained 199 yards vs. Miami in the playoffs last season.

Unless he’s one of your top two wide receivers, you may not want to start Arizona’s Frank Sanders this week. Sanders is coming off a sprained ankle, and he’s going up against an Eagles pass defense that is one of the best in the league. It could also take the Cardinals’ passing game a few weeks to get in sync with Rob Moore unsigned less than a week before the opener.

Look for Titans RB Eddie George to have a monster game against the Bengals. Cincinnati had the worst rushing defense in the league last season, and George traditionally has been more effective in the first half of the season. In two games vs. the Bengals last year, George rushed for 193 yards.

Be sure to start Jaguars QB Mark Brunell and WR Jimmy Smith this week. The Jaguars face the 49ers, whose secondary is in a state of flux right now. San Francisco finished 29th in the league in pass defense last season.

Starting a Giants running back may not be the wisest move this week. First of all, it appears Sean Bennett and LeShon Johnson will split the carries in place of the injured Gary Brown. Second, the Giants visit the Buccaneers, who have one of the best front sevens in football. The Giants scored only three points at Tampa last season.

Even though he is not 100 percent because of an ankle injury, you should still start Saints RB Ricky Williams this week vs. Carolina. The Panthers were last in the league in total defense last season and 26th vs. the run. The Saints rushed for 207 yards in their home game vs. the Panthers last season.
