Super rookie

Torry Holt will produce big in fantasy leagues

By TRENT MODGLIN, Associate editor

This week Torry Holt is ranked 29th on the Pro Football Weekly fantasy draft board. Not bad for a rookie. As a matter of fact, he’s the highest-rated rookie receiver on the list. But he won’t be there for long — he’ll move higher.

Call me crazy, but I believe that by the end of the season, fantasy-leaguers and members of the media will be mentioning his name among the very best in the league without so much as a hint of doubt in their voices.

As far as his fantasy outlook, I wouldn’t make him your top choice because he is a rookie, and this league has been known to swallow talented youngsters alive (see Michael Westbrook, Desmond Howard). However, the energy that young players have is exciting for coaches, fans and fantasy owners to see. And Holt’s enthusiasm in Rams training camp thus far has been unmistakable.

Holt is often seen working out after practice has concluded, and he has been busy helping other rookie receivers with their routes during camp. And if it’s possible to have the sixth pick in the entire draft play better than advertised, he’s doing it. On numerous occasions Holt has electrified teammates, coaches and the crowds at the Rams’ training-camp facilities in Macomb, Ill., with his big-play ability.

St. Louis knew what it was getting in Holt, but he has shown the skills and desire to surpass the already lofty expectations. And the best part is that he’ll get his chance. If versatile RB Marshall Faulk can produce as he did in Indianapolis, he should be able to open the passing lanes. And when he does, teams will not be able to double-team Holt with a rejuvenated and healthy Isaac Bruce on the other side of the field and several multiple-WR formations in the works for the Rams.

While defensive coordinators in the Atlantic Coast Conference are glad to see him leave the college ranks, their counterparts in the NFL are dreading his official arrival.

The potential is there and the story line is half-written. It’s up to Holt to finish it off.
