PFW DRAFT 98
PFW conducted its annual fantasy draft Sept. 3 based on the following
scoring method: six points for TDs scored; three points for TD passes; and three
points for 100-yard rushing or receiving games and 300-yard passing games. Team One
selected first in Round One, last in Round Two, etc. Teams were allowed to trade draft
picks. Starting lineups are composed of one QB, two RBs, two WRs, one PK and
one defense, plus one TE at least half of 14-week season (third WR other half). Analysis
(made before Week One games) by editor-in-chief Ron Pollack.

Trades: None.
Analysis: Given the heavy emphasis on Bronco players, this team cannot
afford for Denvers OL losses during the offseason to adversely affect that offense.
The RBs look strong (especially if this teams No. 3 back, Bennett, becomes a
Marcus Allen-like scorer behind a strong Chief offensive line). This squad is very deep at
QB. How much production the WRs provide is a key for this team. If Richey sticks,
this club has a ton of PK firepower. |
Trades: Second- and third-round picks
(Nos. 23 and 26) to Team Seven for first- and 11th-round picks (Nos. 7 and 127).
Analysis: Loaded up at RB with two picks in Round One. Starting
RBs better not get hurt because this teams backups dont figure to score
enough to be every-week fantasy performers. High-risk WRs must pan out for this team
to be successful. Can Moss consistently score with so many other WRs in Minnesota?
Can Jett repeat last years scoring binge? Will Westbrook ever deliver? Johnson was
good value. |

Trades: Ninth- and
10th-round picks (Nos. 99 and 118) to Team 10 for Ninth- and 10th round picks (Nos. 106
and 111).
Analysis: Favre is obviously going to be a big-time scorer. Anderson
and Rice were nice value picks. The receiving trio of Rice/Dudley/Fryar is solid. The key
here will be squeezing enough production out of the No. 2 RB spot. Murrell, Rhett and
Shehee all seem better-suited to be No. 3 or No. 4 fantasy RBs, so it is essential
that one of them exceeds expectations. |
Trades: None.
Analysis: Great value in Rounds One and Two. Kordell Stewart was the
last of the "Big Four," and I thought Moore would go a little earlier in the
second round than he did. It is critical to this team that Allen and Smith prove they are
not over-the-hill fantasy performers. If they arent big-time scorers, Stewart has
the potential to pick up some of the slack. If two of these three RBs produce, this
team should be very good. |

Trades: Third- and
12th-round picks (Nos. 29 and 140) to Team Six for third- and seventh-round picks (Nos. 30
and 78).
Analysis: High-risk, high-return first two rounds. Im a big
believer in Dillon, but he must show he can do it for an entire season. McNair was a
big-time fantasy scorer last season, but will he run for eight TDs again? This team
needs Hearst to be a 10-TD scorer, not the six-TD guy he was a year ago. WR points must
come by committee since none were taken until the fourth round, but were then taken in
volume. |
Trades: Third- and
seventh-round picks (Nos. 30 and 78) to Team Five for third- and 12th-round picks (Nos. 29
and 140). Fifth- and sixth-round picks (Nos. 54 and 67) to Team 10 for fifth- and
sixth-round picks (Nos. 58 and 63).
Analysis: Starting RBs are very good, but an injury to Martin or
Smith could kill this team since the backups are iffy. If Glenn finally becomes a
consistent TD scorer then receiving starters will be quite good. If not, there will be a
hole in the starting lineup. Moon and Chmura were great value picks. |

Trades: First- and
11th-round picks (Nos. 7 and 127) to Team Two for second- and third-round picks (Nos. 23
and 26).
Analysis: Moved out of first round to pick up an extra premium pick.
Brown and Sharpe must rebound from subpar fantasy years, and Bruce must stay healthy this
year for WR corps to come through. Faulk and Dunn scored like No. 2 fantasy RBs last
season, so one of them needs to step up into a No. 1 role for this team. If Faulk or Dunn
get hurt, can Avery or Staley be regular producers? Boom-or-bust team. |
Trades: None.
Analysis: Running back looks very strong (it would help this team
immensely if Bettis takes back some of the red-zone scores that Kordell Stewart hoarded
last season). Means and Holcombe must produce as a tag-team No. 2 RB. For this team to be
among the elite, the wide receivers must produce despite no picks in the first three
rounds. It will take some of the pressure off the WRs if Brunell finally has a huge,
breakthrough fantasy year. |

Analysis: The first four picks all have the potential to be very good
scorers. I was a little surprised that Alstott didnt go earlier in the third round.
It would help this team greatly if Randy Moss does not take away too many of Carters
TD catches. If Plummer delivers at quarterback (and stays healthy behind a Swiss-cheese
offensive line) and Carl Pickens rebounds to his old fantasy-football form, then this team
could have a very nice starting unit. |
Trades: Fifth- and
sixth-round picks (Nos. 58 and 63) to Team Six for fifth- and sixth-round picks (Nos. 54

10th-round picks (Nos. 99 and 118).
Analysis: Levens was terrific value. Levens holdout and Robert
Smiths track record make injuries a concern. Jeff George should score plenty.
Make-or-break position is WR. It would help immensely if someone from the
Blackwell/Lewis/Ricks trio turns potential into major production. |

Trades: None.
Analysis: Starting running backs should be very productive, although,
if Abdul-Jabbar gets hurt or benched, there could be a problem (a Watters injury is
somewhat protected by the Green pick). How much production the receivers provide is a key.
(Can Moore live up to last season? Can Johnson become a consistent scorer?) Waited longer
than most teams to grab a quarterback yet still did very well at the position. |
Trades: None.
Analysis: Major firepower at wide receiver that no other team can come
close to matching. But taking wide receivers in the first two rounds comes at a price.
That price is that this RB kiddie corps better grow up in a hurry. This group of RBs
says boom-or-bust like you rarely see. If two of them boom, then this team will be a
force. If three or four of them bust, this team could have serious problems. This
teams quarterbacks look to be ordinary at best. |
