PFW DRAFT ’98

PFW conducted its annual fantasy draft Sept. 3 based on the following scoring method: six points for TD’s scored; three points for TD passes; and three points for 100-yard rushing or receiving games and 300-yard passing games. Team One selected first in Round One, last in Round Two, etc. Teams were allowed to trade draft picks. Starting lineups are composed of one QB, two RB’s, two WR’s, one PK and one defense, plus one TE at least half of 14-week season (third WR other half). Analysis (made before Week One games) by editor-in-chief Ron Pollack.

As published in print Sept. 8

18 SUP. WR MIKE PRITCHARD / SEAHAWKS

Trades: None.

Analysis: Given the heavy emphasis on Bronco players, this team cannot afford for Denver’s OL losses during the offseason to adversely affect that offense. The RB’s look strong (especially if this team’s No. 3 back, Bennett, becomes a Marcus Allen-like scorer behind a strong Chief offensive line). This squad is very deep at QB. How much production the WR’s provide is a key for this team. If Richey sticks, this club has a ton of PK firepower.

Trades: Second- and third-round picks (Nos. 23 and 26) to Team Seven for first- and 11th-round picks (Nos. 7 and 127).

Analysis: Loaded up at RB with two picks in Round One. Starting RB’s better not get hurt because this team’s backups don’t figure to score enough to be every-week fantasy performers. High-risk WR’s must pan out for this team to be successful. Can Moss consistently score with so many other WR’s in Minnesota? Can Jett repeat last year’s scoring binge? Will Westbrook ever deliver? Johnson was good value.

Team Three

Team Four

RD. PK. POSITION, PLAYER, TEAM
1 3 QB BRETT FAVRE / PACKERS

6 70 WR IRVING FRYAR / EAGLES
7 75 RB ERRICT RHETT / RAVENS
8 94 WR JAMES McKNIGHT / SEAHAWKS
9 106 QB RYAN LEAF / CHARGERS
10 111 RB RASHAAN SHEHEE / CHIEFS
11 123 PK RYAN LONGWELL / PACKERS

16 190 WR MUHSIN MUHAMMAD / PANTHERS
17 SUP. WR WAYNE CHREBET / JETS
18 SUP. WR JACQUEZ GREEN / BUCCANEERS
RD. PK. POSITION, PLAYER, TEAM
1 4 QB KORDELL STEWART / STEELERS
2 21 WR HERMAN MOORE / LIONS
3 28 RB TERRY ALLEN / REDSKINS
4 45 RB EMMITT SMITH / COWBOYS
5 52 WR ROBERT BROOKS / PACKERS
6 69 RB JAMES STEWART / JAGUARS

9 100 WR DARNAY SCOTT / BENGALS
10 117 RB CHRIS WARREN / COWBOYS
11 124 PK ADAM VINATIERI / PATRIOTS
12 141 QB ROB JOHNSON / BILLS
13 148 PK PETE STOYANOVICH / CHIEFS
14 165 NEW ENGLAND DEFENSE
15 172 ST. LOUIS DEFENSE
16 189 WR SHAWN JEFFERSON / PATRIOTS
17 SUP. TE DAMON JONES / JAGUARS
18 SUP. RB TAVIAN BANKS / JAGUARS

Trades: Ninth- and 10th-round picks (Nos. 99 and 118) to Team 10 for Ninth- and 10th round picks (Nos. 106 and 111).

Analysis: Favre is obviously going to be a big-time scorer. Anderson and Rice were nice value picks. The receiving trio of Rice/Dudley/Fryar is solid. The key here will be squeezing enough production out of the No. 2 RB spot. Murrell, Rhett and Shehee all seem better-suited to be No. 3 or No. 4 fantasy RB’s, so it is essential that one of them exceeds expectations.

Trades: None.

Analysis: Great value in Rounds One and Two. Kordell Stewart was the last of the "Big Four," and I thought Moore would go a little earlier in the second round than he did. It is critical to this team that Allen and Smith prove they are not over-the-hill fantasy performers. If they aren’t big-time scorers, Stewart has the potential to pick up some of the slack. If two of these three RB’s produce, this team should be very good.

Team Five

Team Six

RD. PK. POSITION, PLAYER, TEAM
1 5 RB COREY DILLON / BENGALS
2 20 QB STEVE McNAIR / OILERS
3 30 RB GARRISON HEARST / 49ERS
4 44 WR YANCEY THIGPEN / OILERS
5 53 WR TONY MARTIN / FALCONS

7 77 RB CHARLES WAY / GIANTS
7 78 WR RAE CARRUTH / PANTHERS
8 92 WR BRYAN STILL / CHARGERS
9 101 TE FREDDIE JONES / CHARGERS
10 116 QB KERRY COLLINS / PANTHERS
11 125 RB LEON JOHNSON / JETS
13 149 PK MORTEN ANDERSEN / FALCONS
14 164 PK DOUG PELFREY / BENGALS
15 173 OAKLAND DEFENSE
16 188 DETROIT DEFENSE
17 SUP. RB TYRONE WHEATLEY / GIANTS
18 SUP. WR HINES WARD / STEELERS
RD. PK. POSITION, PLAYER, TEAM
1 6 RB CURTIS MARTIN / JETS
2 19 RB ANTOWAIN SMITH / BILLS

13 150 WR JEROME PATHON / COLTS
14 163 PK NORM JOHNSON / STEELERS
15 174 PK MIKE VANDERJAGT / COLTS
16 187 SAN DIEGO DEFENSE
17 SUP. QB ERIK KRAMER / BEARS
18 SUP. PK CARY BLANCHARD / FREE AGENT

Trades: Third- and 12th-round picks (Nos. 29 and 140) to Team Six for third- and seventh-round picks (Nos. 30 and 78).

Analysis: High-risk, high-return first two rounds. I’m a big believer in Dillon, but he must show he can do it for an entire season. McNair was a big-time fantasy scorer last season, but will he run for eight TD’s again? This team needs Hearst to be a 10-TD scorer, not the six-TD guy he was a year ago. WR points must come by committee since none were taken until the fourth round, but were then taken in volume.

Trades: Third- and seventh-round picks (Nos. 30 and 78) to Team Five for third- and 12th-round picks (Nos. 29 and 140). Fifth- and sixth-round picks (Nos. 54 and 67) to Team 10 for fifth- and sixth-round picks (Nos. 58 and 63).

Analysis: Starting RB’s are very good, but an injury to Martin or Smith could kill this team since the backups are iffy. If Glenn finally becomes a consistent TD scorer then receiving starters will be quite good. If not, there will be a hole in the starting lineup. Moon and Chmura were great value picks.

Team Seven

Team Eight

RD. PK. POSITION, PLAYER, TEAM
2 18 WR TIM BROWN / RAIDERS
2 23 WR ISAAC BRUCE / RAMS
3 26 RB MARSHALL FAULK / COLTS

4 42 RB WARRICK DUNN / BUCCANEERS
5 55 TE SHANNON SHARPE / BRONCOS
6 66 WR TERRELL OWENS / 49ERS
7 79 RB JOHN AVERY / DOLPHINS
8 90 RB DUCE STALEY / EAGLES
9 103 WR ERIC MOULDS / BILLS
10 114 PK JASON HANSON / LIONS

14 161 PK OLINDO MARE / DOLPHINS
15 176 CAROLINA DEFENSE
16 185 RB TRAVIS JERVEY / PACKERS
17 SUP. WR KEVIN LOCKETT / CHIEFS
18 SUP. TE JASON DUNN / EAGLES

Trades: First- and 11th-round picks (Nos. 7 and 127) to Team Two for second- and third-round picks (Nos. 23 and 26).

Analysis: Moved out of first round to pick up an extra premium pick. Brown and Sharpe must rebound from subpar fantasy years, and Bruce must stay healthy this year for WR corps to come through. Faulk and Dunn scored like No. 2 fantasy RB’s last season, so one of them needs to step up into a No. 1 role for this team. If Faulk or Dunn get hurt, can Avery or Staley be regular producers? Boom-or-bust team.

Trades: None.

Analysis: Running back looks very strong (it would help this team immensely if Bettis takes back some of the red-zone scores that Kordell Stewart hoarded last season). Means and Holcombe must produce as a tag-team No. 2 RB. For this team to be among the elite, the wide receivers must produce despite no picks in the first three rounds. It will take some of the pressure off the WR’s if Brunell finally has a huge, breakthrough fantasy year.

Team Nine

Team Ten

RD. PK. POSITION, PLAYER, TEAM
1 9 WR CRIS CARTER / VIKINGS
2 16 RB NAPOLEON KAUFMAN / RAIDERS
3 33 RB MIKE ALSTOTT / BUCCANEERS
4 40 WR CARL PICKENS / BENGALS
5 57 WR MICHAEL JACKSON / RAVENS
6 64 QB JAKE PLUMMER / CARDINALS
7 81 WR O.J. McDUFFIE / DOLPHINS
8 88 RB JAY GRAHAM / RAVENS
9 105 TE TROY DRAYTON / DOLPHINS
10 112 PK MIKE HOLLIS / JAGUARS
11 129 QB JIM HARBAUGH / RAVENS
12 136 RB EDGAR BENNETT / BEARS
13 153 DENVER DEFENSE
14 160 TE DAVID LaFLEUR / COWBOYS
15 177 JACKSONVILLE DEFENSE
16 184 PK CHRIS BONIOL / EAGLES
17 SUP. RB KIMBLE ANDERS / CHIEFS
18 SUP. QB DANNY KANELL / GIANTS
RD. PK. POSITION, PLAYER, TEAM
1 10 RB DORSEY LEVENS / PACKERS
2 15 RB ROBERT SMITH / VIKINGS
3 34 QB JEFF GEORGE / RAIDERS
4 39 WR JIMMY SMITH / JAGUARS
5 54 WR ANDRE RISON / CHIEFS
6 67 TE TONY GONZALEZ / CHIEFS
7 82 RB LAMAR SMITH / SAINTS
8 87 WR WILL BLACKWELL / STEELERS
9 99 WR JERMAINE LEWIS / RAVENS
10 118 WR MIKHAEL RICKS / CHARGERS
11 130 PK GARY ANDERSON / VIKINGS
12 135 PITTSBURGH DEFENSE
13 154 QB PEYTON MANNING / COLTS
14 159 PK JOHN CARNEY / CHARGERS
15 178 MINNESOTA DEFENSE
16 183 RB SKIP HICKS / REDSKINS
17 SUP. QB DAN MARINO / DOLPHINS
18 SUP. WR WILLIE DAVIS / OILERS

Trades: None.

Analysis: The first four picks all have the potential to be very good scorers. I was a little surprised that Alstott didn’t go earlier in the third round. It would help this team greatly if Randy Moss does not take away too many of Carter’s TD catches. If Plummer delivers at quarterback (and stays healthy behind a Swiss-cheese offensive line) and Carl Pickens rebounds to his old fantasy-football form, then this team could have a very nice starting unit.

Trades: Fifth- and sixth-round picks (Nos. 58 and 63) to Team Six for fifth- and sixth-round picks (Nos. 54 and 67). Ninth- and 10th-round picks (Nos. 106 and 111) to Team Three for ninth-and 10th-round picks (Nos. 99 and 118).

Analysis: Levens was terrific value. Levens’ holdout and Robert Smith’s track record make injuries a concern. Jeff George should score plenty. Make-or-break position is WR. It would help immensely if someone from the Blackwell/Lewis/Ricks trio turns potential into major production.

Team Eleven

Team Twelve

RD. PK. POSITION, PLAYER, TEAM
1 11 RB KARIM ABDUL-JABBAR / DOLPHINS
2 14 RB RICKY WATTERS / SEAHAWKS
3 35 WR KEYSHAWN JOHNSON / JETS
4 38 WR ROB MOORE / CARDINALS
5 59 QB STEVE YOUNG / 49ERS

6 61 WR JOHNNIE MORTON / LIONS
7 84 QB SCOTT MITCHELL / LIONS
8 85 RB CHARLIE GARNER / EAGLES
9 108 TE ERIC GREEN / RAVENS
10 109 WR EDDIE KENNISON / RAMS

12 133 WR KEVIN DYSON / OILERS
13 156 N.Y. GIANT DEFENSE
14 157 PK TODD PETERSON / SEAHAWKS
15 180 BALTIMORE DEFENSE
16 181 PK JOHN HALL / JETS
17 SUP. RB BAM MORRIS / BEARS
18 SUP. RB TSHIMANGA BIAKABUTUKA / PANTHERS

Trades: None.

Analysis: Starting running backs should be very productive, although, if Abdul-Jabbar gets hurt or benched, there could be a problem (a Watters injury is somewhat protected by the Green pick). How much production the receivers provide is a key. (Can Moore live up to last season? Can Johnson become a consistent scorer?) Waited longer than most teams to grab a quarterback yet still did very well at the position.

Trades: None.

Analysis: Major firepower at wide receiver that no other team can come close to matching. But taking wide receivers in the first two rounds comes at a price. That price is that this RB kiddie corps better grow up in a hurry. This group of RB’s says boom-or-bust like you rarely see. If two of them boom, then this team will be a force. If three or four of them bust, this team could have serious problems. This team’s quarterbacks look to be ordinary at best.
