Week Three — Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

Looking for a quarterback to play this week? How about Randall Cunningham of the Vikings? Cunningham, starting in place of the injured Brad Johnson, could have a field day against a Detroit defense that has given up a ton of big plays already this season. In three starts at the end of last season, Cunningham threw six TD passes.

Looking for a running back to play this week? How about Travis Jervey or Raymont Harris of the Packers? As of Tuesday, Green Bay hadn’t named the replacement for the injured Dorsey Levens, but both Jervey and Harris are sure to carry the ball this week vs. a Bengal run defense that got mauled last week by the Lions. Detroit rushed for 224 yards, including 185 by Barry Sanders.

If you’ve been waiting for Bill RB Antowain Smith to break out, it could happen this week vs. the Rams. St. Louis’ run defense was no match last week for Viking RB Robert Smith, who rushed for 179 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

You may want to bench Chief RB Donnell Bennett this week. Bennett’s numbers slipped considerably in Week Two — K.C.’s first full game without standout OG Dave Szott — and this week he faces a Charger defense that has been surprisingly effective vs. the run. San Diego limited Oiler RB Eddie George to 11 yards on 15 carries last week.

Both Bobby Hoying and Jake Plummer have struggled so far this season (one TD pass between them), but something has to give when the Eagles play the Cardinals Sunday night. Neither team has defended the pass particularly well so far, and both quarterbacks showed some signs of improvement in Week Two.

Don’t let Peyton Manning’s early-season struggles deter you from starting Colt WR Marvin Harrison this week. Harrison faces a Jet pass defense that ranks near the bottom of the league and already has given up four TD passes.
