Week 17 — Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

Don’t start Chief QB Rich Gannon this week. Gannon left last week’s game with a concussion; he might not have played the whole game this week, anyway, with Kansas City’s quarterback of the future, Elvis Grbac, waiting in the wings; and the Chiefs play the Raiders, whose pass defense ranks in the top five in the league in yards allowed and average gain allowed per pass.

The Bills have a chance to improve their playoff position, so they’ll go all out this week at New Orleans. That could translate into a big day for Buffalo QB Doug Flutie, who faces the league’s 30th-ranked pass defense. Cardinal QB Jake Plummer was able to scramble for major yards last week, and running is one of Flutie’s strengths, as well.

Look for Colt RB Marshall Faulk, coming off his worst performance of the season, to have a big bounce-back game this week. Faulk faces a Panther defense ranked 26th in rushing yards allowed. Carolina has given up more than 200 yards rushing in a game three times this season.

You probably ought to bench Miami’s Karim Abdul-Jabbar this week. The Dolphins have not been running the ball well lately at all, and this week they go up against a Falcon run defense that ranks in the top five in rushing yards allowed and average gain allowed per rush.

On the flip side in that game, you may want to steer clear of Falcon QB Chris Chandler. Atlanta has nothing to play for, so it’s likely the injury-prone Chandler won’t play the whole game. Even if he does, he’ll face a Dolphin pass defense that has allowed only 14 touchdowns, tied for lowest in the league. Miami shut down Denver’s passing game Monday night.

You may want to sit Cowboy QB Troy Aikman this week. Aikman faces a much-improved Redskin pass defense that allowed only 87 yards last week. Aikman, meanwhile, has just three TD passes in his last four games and hasn’t thrown for as many as 200 yards in each of his last three outings.
