Week Eleven — Fantasy matchups to exploit or avoid

You might want to consider one of the Eagle running backs this week. Philadelphia had a breakthrough rushing performance last week, gaining a season-high 219 yards against Detroit. Charlie Garner and Duce Staley are dividing the carries, but both had 16 or more last week. The Eagles take on the Redskins’ 28th-ranked rushing defense this week.

Could this be the week Saint RB Lamar Smith breaks out of his slump? Smith is averaging just 2.2 yards per carry in his last four games, but this week he faces the Rams, who have yielded an average of 164 rushing yards in their last two games.

Another player worth starting from the Saint-Ram game is St. Louis WR Ricky Proehl. With Isaac Bruce either sidelined or less than 100 percent, and Eddie Kennison a total non-factor in the offense, Proehl is the Rams’ No. 1 receiver. He caught eight passes for 99 yards and a touchdown last week and faces a Saint defense that yielded 267 passing yards to the Rams in Week One.

Raven RB Priest Holmes got back on track last week with a 99-yard rushing effort, but he could find the going tough this week vs. the Chargers. San Diego’s top-ranked run defense proved it was for real last week by limiting Denver’s Terrell Davis to a season-low 69 yards.

Stick with the hot guy and start Dolphin WR O.J. McDuffie this week. McDuffie broke out of a long TD slump with a pair of scores last week, and this week he goes against a bad Carolina pass defense that could be even worse without CB Doug Evans, who might miss the rest of the season because of injuries.

While all the focus in the Jaguar-Buccaneer game will be on the health of Jacksonville QB Mark Brunell, Tampa Bay QB Trent Dilfer might be a guy worth starting this week. Dilfer had a season-high 294 passing yards and two TD’s last week, throwing one apiece to WR’s Reidel Anthony and Bert Emanuel. Jacksonville’s pass defense is beatable.
