Buchsbaum on pre-draft workouts

Vick set to work out for Chargers today; other player workouts

March 29, 2001

Beginning April 6, Pro Football Weekly draft analyst Joel Buchsbaum will provide exclusive previews of the draft on our premium-services Web site, PFWsports.com. For only $9.95, you can subscribe to this service (click here for the details), which provides late updates to Buchsbaum’s 2001 Draft Preview book (click here to order the book online, or call 1-800-FOOTBALL). As a preview of the type of information you’ll get with this service, we are providing — free — his take on some recent workouts by draft prospects.

  • The Chargers have their personal workout with Michael Vick today. If it goes well, he will be the No. 1 pick in the draft.
  • Jamar Fletcher worked out at Wisconsin, and it was just about as expected. He didn’t run any scintillating 40s. He was in the 4.55 area. But he showed great ball skills, change of direction, quickness and reaction time during the drills, and he looks like a heck of a player.
  • At the USC workout, Ennis Davis was out of shape and was a bust. He really hurt his draft status. Zeke Moreno had an average workout, impressed more with his intelligence more than anything else. He ran about a 4.9. Markus Steele ran the best and had the best athletic workout, per se. But he didn’t exactly (awe) people working him out with his knowledge of the game. Ifeanyi Ohalete, the strong safety, had a so-so workout, ran around 4.7ish — nothing to get excited about. He needed a good workout probably to get drafted. Now it’s a toss-up whether he gets drafted or not.
  • At Mississippi State, Willie Blade did not have a good workout, which could hurt him greatly in the draft, given some of his previous injury concerns. Ellis Wyms, the other defensive lineman, did not run nearly as fast as people thought he would. Fred Smoot, the corner, looked excellent athletically and ran well. But the fact that he only bench-pressed one time is a concern. However, his weight is up to about 178 pounds now.
