Buchsbaum on pre-draft workouts

Inside word on David Terrell’s workout; news from other workouts

March 19, 2001

Beginning April 6, Pro Football Weekly draft analyst Joel Buchsbaum will provide exclusive previews of the draft on our premium-services Web site, PFWsports.com. For only $9.95, you can subscribe to this service (click here for the details), which provides late updates to Buchsbaum’s 2001 Draft Preview book (click here to order the book online, or call 1-800-FOOTBALL). • David Terrell did not run or jump well at Michigan’s workout, but he did work out well. Some people felt he came across as a little bit of a prima donna with some entitlement-type stuff. As though he felt like he was entitled, like he’s special, he’s on a pedestal and does what he wants.
  • McNeese State WR Jimmy Redmond may have gotten himself drafted by running like the wind.
  • Texas Tech WR Derek Dorris, who doesn’t play like he has speed, had a tremendous athletic workout.
  • Oregon State DE DeLawrence Grant had a vertical jump of 40 inches and ran just under 4.7 outdoors on AstroTurf. That’s a positive — he’s 276 pounds.
  • One of the huge complaints scouts have is that more and more of the players are listening totally to their agents, and the agents are trying to run everything. At one school, the agent wanted the scouts to change the time of the workout to fit his schedule better. Then, before they went on the workout, they had most of the players there before the workout, and they were going to work them out outside where they always do. The agent wanted them worked in a certain place, indoors. And if players hadn’t finally stood up to the agent, the whole thing would’ve been screwed up. In another case, you had an agent, Mike Archer and some LB coaches flew across the country to work out a player as a linebacker. The player refused to work out as a linebacker. Sid Hall, a Jets scout, made a great address in dressing the player down, basically putting the kid down, telling him that these guys flew across the country to work you out. So the player finally conferred with his agent, and his agent let him do a few drills. Two things are getting out of hand: One, the agents are running everything. Two, the players are using the agents, dropping them as soon as they can and pick up other agents. And they’re using these agents, basically, as meal tickets. They’re thinking, "You get me a line of credit, pay for my workout and maybe I’ll stay with you." And for the next agent, they tell him they want a car, a boat, etc.

PFW: Why don’t these agents have binding contracts with the players?

Buchsbaum: Two reasons: A lot of players won’t sign them, and some of the players probably sign before they should.
