Impressions of the sixth round

With their selection of Louisiana State OT Brandon Winey at the top of Round Six, the Dolphins got a player whom PFW’s Joel Buchsbaum rated as a third-round talent. However, Winey was downgraded on most teams’ draft boards because he sat out the Senior Bowl and the Scouting Combine with a cast on his left wrist. He then had a very unimpressive workout, running only a 5.4 40-yard dash. Although Winey has been an underachiever, Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt obviously feels he can get this talented to produce more than sixth-round value.

Two quarterbacks named Josh were drafted in the sixth round. Seattle picked Louisiana State’s Josh Booty, who is considered a developmental prospect with a big upside. And, if there is anyone who bring out the best in a young quarterback with lots of athletic ability, it’s Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren, who’ll be Booty’s personal tutor. The other Josh is Oklahoma’s Josh Heupel, whom the Dolphins took. Heupel is the opposite of Booty, in that Heupel lacks the natural athletic ability that Booty has, but Heupel has superior football savvy and is a student of the game. The Dolphins will now have an interesting mix of quarterbacks on their roster — Jay Fiedler, Mike Quinn, former Jet Ray Lucas and now Heupel.

Carolina finally addressed its suspect RB situation with the addition of Syracuse RB Dee Brown in Round Six. However, although Brown is versatile and catch well out of the backfield, he doesn’t appear to have the skills to supplant the perennially injured Tshimanga Biakabutuka in the Panthers’ starting backfield. … Buffalo continued to strengthen its secondary with the addition of Notre Dame S Tony Driver, after having drafted Ohio State CB Nate Clements in Round One. Driver is continued a project, but he can utilize his talents as a special-teams player while he hones his craft as a safety. … Illinois’ Jameel Cook is a pass-catching fullback who will fit nicely in the Buccaneers’ offensive scheme.

New England added some new blood to an area in need of help when it took its second tight end of the day. The Patriots tabbed South Carolina State’s Arther Love in this round after having drafted Notre Dame TE Jabari Holloway in Round Four. … The Colts took their fourth defensive back of this draft in Round Six — S Jason Doering. Doering doesn’t provide the speed the Colts lacked coming into the draft, but he adds toughness and leadership ability, and he’s a decent run defender. However, third-round pick Cory Bird (4.41 40-time) from Virginia Tech and fifth-round pick Raymond Walls (4.45) from Southern Mississippi will certainly add that much-needed speed to the Colts’ secondary, if they make the team.
