2001 NFL draft day coverage

So close and yet so far for Brett Favre

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
April 21, 2001

My condolences go out to Packers QB Brett Favre.

While Favre may not be quite the player he was at the height of his unbelievable pro career, he is still an outstanding player and an even better leader.

What he needs is a little bit of help from the WR position. Antonio Freeman is nowhere near as good as he once was. He may get paid like a star, but he no longer plays like one. Bill Schroeder posts decent numbers, but he doesn’t really scare opposing teams.

What this team lacks is a No. 1 wide receiver. What this team needs is a No. 1 wide receiver. What this team, what Brett Favre, did not get is a No. 1 wide receiver.

They came close. Painfully close.

With two teams left to pick before Green Bay’s selection, David Terrell and Koren Robinson were still on the board. Then the dream died.

Boom. Boom.

Both players were grabbed right out from under Green Bay’s nose. Terrell to the Bears, Robinson to the Seahawks.

So close for the Packers. So far.

With Terrell and Robinson unavailable, the Packers went for defense and took DE Jamal Reynolds. No need to criticize the pick. Defensive line is also an area of need. The value wasn’t there at the WR spot.

The Packers took what the draft gave them. Unfortunately for Favre, it didn’t give him what he needed most.

For at least one more year, it looks like Favre is going to have to do more than throw the passes. He’s going to also have to carry the passing game on his shoulders.
