2001 NFL draft day coverage

Bears really need McNown to develop to take advantage of talented receivers

Now more than ever the Bears need Cade McNown to become, if not a star, at least a highly capable quarterback.

Just look at the WR talent on this team.

They just drafted WR David Terrell in the first round. Terrell has the ability to become a big star in the NFL. He has all the tools — size, strength, quickness, speed, you name it — to be great. Plus, and perhaps most importantly, he delivers when the game is on the line.

If Marcus Robinson returns to complete health, he is a stud play maker.

This duo, on paper, should torment opposing secondaries for years to come.

McNown must deliver, however. A former first-round pick in 1999, McNown has been a disappointment to date, mostly because of his attitude and lack of patience.

Jim Miller and Shane Matthews are also around, but I don’t think the Bears will become a dynamic offense with either of them. Short term, they may be more effective than McNown, but neither has much upside. Miller plays less effectively the more he plays. A lack of arm strength limits what Matthews can get out of the offense.

For the Bears’ offense to scare opposing teams, they need McNown to live up to his hype and take full advantage of Terrell and Robinson.

McNown is the only quarterback on the roster that can become a star. He has the mobility you like a quarterback to have in today’s version of the game and has the potential to become a good passer. He needs to become a much better leader and learn to take what the defense gives him.

If McNown continues to be a bust as a pro, it would seem to be a terrible waste of the wonderful talent WRs Terrell and Robinson possess.
