2001 NFL draft day coverage

More kudos to the Chargers

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
April 21, 2001

A tip of the hat to the Chargers.

Didn’t I already say that after what they did early in the first round when they traded down and still got their man? Yes I did. That’s OK, I’ll say it again.

Well done.

After San Diego took RB LaDainian Tomlinson in the first round, I felt that QB Drew Brees was the man they should go after next. At the time, I thought they’d need to trade up ahead of Miami and Oakland in the latter part of the first round in order to get Brees.

The Chargers stood pat. Brees remained on the board. When the Chargers pick in the second round came up, Brees was still there. Not for long.

Now the Chargers not only got a player ready to produce right now in Tomlinson, something you can’t say about QB Michael Vick who they passed up, but they also got their quarterback of the future in Brees. This isn’t to say that Brees is a better prospect than Vick. Clearly he’s not. But Brees has the potential to be a quality starter some day and should benefit mightily from the fact that he will get to learn from Norv Turner, one of the best QB coaches in the game.

While Vick could still make the Chargers look bad if he becomes the next Michael Jordan of quarterbacks, you have to be impressed by how well the Chargers’ crystal ball is working today in terms of identifying players they want and determining whether they will be around when they pick.
