2001 NFL Scouting Combine

Q&A with Wisconsin RB Michael Bennett

Feb. 23, 2001

INDIANAPOLIS — Following are excerpts from a question-and-answer session with Wisconsin’s Michael Bennett, who was ranked as the third-best running back in the draft by Joel Buchsbaum in his Jan. 15 printout.

Q: Is there a player in the NFL you’re similar to, style-wise?

A: There’s a lot of guys. I look at Fred Taylor, Edgerrin James, Marshall Faulk, guys like that. That’s who stand out to me, and I would love to pattern my game after those guys.

Q: Was it frustrating at all playing behind Ron Dayne?

A: Actually, it was a great learning experience for me. It wasn’t frustrating. You get a chance to sit behind a guy and really emerge as the star that he was. Just being able to sit behind him, learn things from him, it really helped me grow and mature as a football player.

Q: Did you think about returning for your senior year and making your run at the Heisman?

A: I thought about it, but I’m not a person that’s built on awards. I’m a person that follows my dream. Actually, I really did follow one of my dreams, and that was to go to the Olympic trials. To start at a Big Ten university … I wanted to live up to the challenge of being able to step in and build from Ron Dayne.

Q: Can you speak at all about the two misdemeanors you were charged with?

A: My lawyer has instructed me not to talk about anything of that matter. But it was really something that shouldn’t have happened, and it’s a situation that I really will learn from. I basically told (the teams interviewing me) the story and the things that happened. They were pretty good with it. People have run-ins in their life, and unfortunately, I had this one. This is my only time ever being in trouble in my life. So it’s something that I’ve definitely learned from, and I’m going to move on.
