2001 NFL Scouting Combine

Q&A with Texas OT Leonard Davis

Feb. 23, 2001

INDIANAPOLIS — Following are excerpts from a question-and-answer session with Texas’ Leonard Davis, who was ranked as the best offensive tackle in the draft by Joel Buchsbaum in his Jan. 15 printout. Davis, a 6-5 1/2, 370-pound senior, was projected as the fourth overall pick in the draft in Buchsbaum’s Feb. 1 mock draft.

Q: How many reps did you do (in Friday testing)?

A: Thirty-three. I think I did good. It was the best I’ve ever done. Thirty-one was my previous best.

Q: Do you think you’re a top-five player?

A: I feel like I’ve moved up. I feel the coaches, scouts and GMs are really interested in me and think I’m a great person who they’re not going to have to worry about off the field. I think that helps a lot, having good character.

Q: Do you think you’re as good a prospect as Chris Samuels (drafted in the first round by the Redskins last year)?

A: I don’t know for sure. From Web sites and Internet stuff, they say I don’t have his technique at this point.

Q: Do you think the fact you’ve been playing left tackle gives you an advantage?

A: Left tackle feels real natural. I was a right tackle for three weeks in the spring, and when I got moved, I felt right at home and have made good progress.

Q: Is 370 your highest weight?

A: I’ve been up to 381.

Q: When did you start playing football?

A: Sixth grade.

Q: Is it true that you already weighed 200 by the fifth grade, and was playing football always something you wanted to do?

A: Yeah, it’s always been a dream of mine. And I knew if I worked hard enough through high school and college, I could have an opportunity to play professionally.

Q: How old were you when you reached 300 pounds?

A: Thirteen.

Q: Do you have any kind of gut feeling on what team might pick you?

A: It’s hard to say. It seems like 4-5 teams are looking at me pretty hard.

Q: Which teams?

A: Cincinnati, Arizona, New England, Atlanta and Cleveland, among others.

Q: What’s your favorite food?

A: I like fried chicken.

Q: Is controlling your weight a concern?

A: Maybe a little bit. I’ve pretty much kept it under control and not let it get out of hand.

Q: When is your private workout?

A: March 21.

Q: Was your goal to just come here and overwhelm everybody or just be solid?

A: I came here to put on a show. Everyone else gripes about how tedious all this is, and they don’t have fun. But I’m having fun. I feel like I have to sell myself, and I think that’s what everyone should do in order to be drafted as high as possible.

Q: Who’s the best player you’ve gone up against?

A: Darren Howard my sophomore year, and this past year, Justin Smith of Missouri.

Q: What players do you emulate the most?

A: I really like to watch Larry Allen and Tony Boselli.
