Buchsbaum’s draft observations

New player in draft could go as early as third round

By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor
Monday, March 27, 2000

There is a new player in the draft. Tennessee State WR Avion Black has been added to the draft pool.

Black originally was considered a Prop 42 who was going back to school because he was going to graduate with his class. However, the NCAA ruled that he is not a Prop 42, but instead a Prop 48, which means that his eligibility is now over.

Black is a very skillful little receiver who is has exceptional quickness, very good speed, very good jumping ability and body control. His pass catching has gotten better, and he has improved every year. He also is a very dangerous kickoff-return man.

It would not be a surprise if he goes as high as the third round.

Black was measured recently at 5-10 3/8, 179 pounds. He ran the 40 between 4.39 and 4.48 on grass. He had a vertical jump that, according to some, was 37 inches with a two-inch cheat; others gave him the 39. He broad-jumped almost 11 feet.

His stats have improved from year to year. In ’97, Black had seven catches for 77 yards and three kickoff returns for 72 yards. In ’98, he caught 28 for 487 yards and three touchdowns, returned 16 kickoffs for 462 yards and one touchdown. Last year he caught 47-893-8 and returned 23 kickoffs for 786 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 34.2 yards per return.
