| Now that the NFL Scouting Combine is over, scouts are scattering across
the nation to see draft-eligible players work out. With this in mind,
ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum to weigh in on what he is
hearing.
Q: Can you talk about some of the latest individual workouts?
Buchsbaum: At Tennessee's workout, (RB) Jamal Lewis really helped himself. After
looking a step slower during the year and a little sluggish, at 231 pounds he ran 4.41,
vertical-jumped about 40 inches and then caught the ball extremely well during the
workout.
(DE) Shaun Ellis also helped himself with a very impressive time in the low
4.7's. And Darwin Walker, the defensive tackle, also ran and worked out very well.
On the negative side, CB (Dwayne) Goodrich and S Deon Grant did not run
as well as expected. Goodrich ran around 4.54. Grant was in the same area, maybe a little
bit slower.
At Ohio State's workout, the star of the show was James Cotton, the undersized
defensive end, who had the fastest time of any Buckeye player. Cotton, 244 pounds, and the
scouts wanted to work him out as an outside backer, but the Ohio State strength
coach who supervised and ran the workout would not grant them permission to do so. So
everyone is going to have to go back in and work him out separately now.
Na'il Diggs, the outside linebacker, surprised some people by running 4.57 and
doing the 20-yard agility drill in an exceptional 4.07, because he does look a little
stiff when he plays.
Marshall QB Chad Pennington threw the ball very well in his workout. He just
threw a variety of routes well, and when they asked him to air it out as far as he could,
he did get it over 60 yards. |
