Buchsbaum's draft observations

Comparing Peter Warrick and Plaxico Burress

Tuesday, March 14, 2000

The two top-rated wide receivers for this year's draft are Peter Warrick and Plaxico Burress. If the draft were held today, it would be very possible that both would go in the top five picks.

The Pro Football Weekly Internet Edition asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum to weigh in on these two wide receivers.

Q: Can you compare and contrast Peter Warrick and Plaxico Burress?

Buchsbaum: Plaxico has rare size and can take over and dominate games like he showed against Michigan and in Michigan State's bowl game against Florida this year. But he's very inconsistent and has games when he just totally disappears, and you never know when he's going to show up to play. He's extremely immature, has poor work habits but has rare size and ability.

Warrick has average size, but he's got rare running ability with the ball and is most dangerous after the catch, returning kicks and on reverses. He also is a very acrobatic receiver who goes up and takes jump balls away from people. He's had good hands, but he will drop some because he's always looking for the big play and will tend to run before he catches the ball at times and not look it into his hands. He also gets a little sloppy with ball security and will fumble.

Burress is more of a power runner after the catch, not a real nifty, elusive, make-you-miss guy. He's got deceptive speed, and he's sort of a cross between Keyshawn Johnson and Randy Moss. But he’s not as fast as Randy Moss is and not as sure-handed as either of them are or quite as natural catching the ball.
