Buchsbaum's draft observations

Comparing the top two quarterbacks

Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000

ProFootballWeekly.com asked PFW personnel analyst Joel Buchsbaum for his observations on his top two rated quarterbacks on the draft board.

Q: How do you compare Marshall QB Chad Pennington and Louisville QB Chris Redman?

Buchsbaum: Pennington’s advantage is that he’s a little bit more mobile and he’s a little bit of a quicker study. Redman’s advantage is that he’s unbelievably tough and gutty and he’s "one of the guys" more than Pennington. Pennington has a little bit of that Rhodes scholar air about him.

Q: As of right now, who grades out better?

Buchsbaum: Pennington grades out a little better. The biggest thing is there’s no medical history on Pennington. With Redman, teams have a back and a knee they have to check out.

Q: Is the one who’s selected first yet to be determined?

Buchsbaum: Probably. But the 49ers, if they go for a quarterback, would probably favor Pennington because they like a more mobile quarterback.
