Buchsbaum's draft observations

Warrick, Brown, Arrington and Samuels lead draft board

Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000

ProFootballWeekly.com asked PFW personnel analyst Joel Buchsbaum for his observations on the group of players bunched at the top of most teams’ draft boards.

Q: How do you break down the top of the draft?

Buchsbaum: You have the three elite players, and Penn State’s Courtney Brown probably has the best character and the least baggage of the three. Florida State WR Peter Warrick is a touchdown maker, and Penn State LB LaVar Arrington may be the most spectacular of them all. Arrington and Warrick are spectacular. They’re more Vince Carter types, whereas Brown is more of a Tim Duncan, to use an NBA analogy.

Q: What about Alabama OT Chris Samuels?

Buchsbaum: The thing that makes Chris Samuels so attractive is that he’s the only guy ready to play left tackle, and left tackles are at a much higher premium than right tackles.

Q: Will those four guys be the first four picks in the draft?

Buchsbaum: Those four are probably the top four players in the draft. But we don’t know, if the Bengals keep the fourth overall pick and Samuels is there, if they would go for Samuels or go for defense or go for another position if they lose RB Corey Dillon or trade WR Carl Pickens.

Q: Warrick is a little shorter than 5-foot-11. Is his height a concern?

Buchsbaum: It’s less than ideal, but he plays a lot taller because he’s a good jumper.

Q: So there’s not a Desmond Howard type of concern with Warrick?

Buchsbaum: No. Warrick has not had the trouble with the bump-and-run Desmond Howard did. Howard was a legitimately small guy. Warrick is well-built and powerfully built.
