College notepad

By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor
Monday, Nov. 29, 1999

I realize that Wisconsin RB Ron Dayne will win the Heisman Trophy, but nobody was more deserving of it than Georgia Tech’s Joe Hamilton this year. In 10 of Georgia Tech’s 11 games, Hamilton ran an offense that scored four or more touchdowns.

Although some people hate to admit it, Florida State needed to get Peter Warrick back at the end of the year to beat Florida. Without Warrick, I doubt the Seminoles would be playing in the Sugar Bowl for the national championship.

Notre Dame could face continuing problems next year, which may cost coach Bob Davie his job. First, the team continues to play a killer schedule. Second, the academic standards are very high. Third, the school is not in a conference.

Two top young quarterbacks in the college ranks are also top pro baseball prospects, and they may end up playing pro baseball, which would be a tremendous blow to the NFL. If Georgia’s Quincy Carter, who has already played two years in the Cubs’ system, would just concentrate on football for the next two years, and Stanford backup QB Joe Borchard would do likewise, they could be the first two quarterbacks selected in the 2002 draft.
