College notepad

By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor
Monday, Nov. 22, 1999

Georgia QB Quincy Carter has indicated that he may opt to resume playing pro baseball and also declare himself eligible for the NFL draft. But as a second-year sophomore, he would need a special waiver to be eligible for the draft. There are mitigating circumstances, as Carter signed a letter of intent with Georgia Tech in 1996 but instead opted to play pro baseball. Carter’s original date of enrollment at Georgia was spring 1998, but he missed spring practice that year while playing in the minors. Carter has impressive physical tools but is not ready for the NFL. If he stayed in school for two more years, he could develop into an Akili Smith-type, premier prospect. But by jumping the gun, he would really be hurting himself. The general feeling is that he is also kidding himself if he thinks he is a prime baseball prospect, as he never managed to hit his weight his first two years in the minors.

Everyone thought Florida head coach Steve Spurrier was playing possum with his offense the past two weeks, but it continued to look somewhat discombobulated against Florida State. Spurrier may have exacerbated the problem by rotating quarterbacks by downs against the Seminoles.
